As the school year begins around the country, please share the qualities of your favorite teacher of all time. For me, American Gov't, Cincinnati, Ohio. She challenged us about everything, taught us to read TIME magazine from cover to cover every week, and made us think for ourselves. That was over 30 years ago and I still remember her....the self-discipline she taught us, the love she had for us, and the passion for learning she instilled in us. Thanks for sharing, it may help to make me a better teacher! :)

    Mrs. Aranda, hands down!
I've been wanting to track her down all these years.

She was my amazing 3rd grade teacher! It's funny how an act of kindness can stay forever locked in your heart and mind.

My Mother used to cut my bangs horribly short. She tried her best but the more she tried to straighten them out, the shorter they became.

On one particularly "bad" hair day, I rested my head down on the desk to avoid the dreaded stares. When she asked me what was the matter, I told her I had a headache. I was mortified and embarassed in front of my class. Looking back, I know she knew. She asked me if I wanted to stay in at recess and help her decorate the class. As we were hanging posters she turned and looked at me with the most sincerest expression and told me "By the way, I was going to tell you that I love your hair cut, you look so pretty." All I could say was "Really?" I believed her. And for the rest of the day I felt like a queen.

Who would have known such a small act of kindness would have touched me so much! The power of positive words!!

    Wonderful thread!

Thank you for your service to our children!! Have a great school year.

    My influential teacher....1st grade
I had a teacher in first grade who I just loved. That was around 1963-4, beginnings of the Peace Corps. She left us mid-year to go to Liberia with her husband. I knew I was going to do the same thing one day. In 1980, I joined the Peace Corps....Colombia and Ecuador til 1984. I would love to meet her again some day! I have been working in international education ever since.

WOW, that was really an influence in your life! It is amazing to me, how we as teachers, can truly have a positive influence on children. And you working in international education---that sounds like a wonderful life adventure.
