Update - Sir Spheres, a possibility?

After meeting with the onc. today in Chapel Hill, he suggested sir spheres. We have an appointment to discuss with radiologist, first of September. Dr. didn't seem concerned about bone mets at this time(although, I'm sure he is concerned)...he said the liver would start causing problems in two or three months if not addressed...so I guess it's one step at a time. Anyone have experience with sir spheres?

Also said he will be trying to set up a phase one or phase two clinical trial??? We will be going to Duke for a second opinion (or to be added to the clinical trial list)

They will be doing radiation for the back pain, starting Friday for 10-15 days, then sir spheres, and clinical trials....or at least that's kinda the plan...today...

    I am scheduled for the procedure on a small liver tumor that is too close to the vena cava for RFA, on September 9. I can't tell you how it goes until after that.

    It is good that your onc has a plan. Best wishes.

    I am sorry I don't know anything about the procedure, just wanted to know you are imn my thoughts

    I too do not know anything about that procedure. My husband just had surgeries, chemo and has been in three phase one clinical trial but cancer keeps on growing and spreading.
    Great that you are getting second opinion and that the doctors have a plan. A plan of attack and schedule of fights helps so much to keep moving toward winning the battle. Know that I am keeping you and your husband in my thoughts and prayers.

    sir spheres
    I had theraspheres (different brand name), and that is what got me to resection. Before the spheres, i was not a candidate for resection due to size and location of tumors. Within 3 months of spheres, i had a resection, they removed 55% of liver. The speres where put in my right lobe and shrank and killed most all of tumors. They did resection to find very few cells alive. I have just finished chemo this week and they say I am "potentially cured". I will have scans every 3 months for now, and blood work. MY CEA is still below 2. I truely believe that the spheres are what saved me. I did have Gall Bladder problems after the spheres, but that is gone now (gall bladder removed with resection).

    We have had a couple of others that had the SIR sheres, and not Theraspheres, with not a good response. It is a very weasy procedure and not very much recovery from it. Please ask more questions if you want to, I will tell you anything I know.

    Christy - Do you know who specifically had negative outcomes with this procedure? I am scheduled to have it done at Sloan Kettering. I would be very surprised if a facility such as Sloan that otherwise provides excellent care offered a treatment with only negative outcomes. I am going to proceed with it but I would be very interested in hearing about the experiences of others who have had the procedure.

    I know PATTI had sir spheres and never got over procedure. I personally think they are great (the ones I had). I think they are just different name brands. PATTI had some bad side effects and had a stroke. I would do it again without hesitation though. Are they going to do just one side or at least one side at a time?

    Christy and Tina - Thanks for the info. I have only the one tumor in my liver. It has come and gone on the CT scans over the past 18 months. I have done chemo and was waiting to see if any other liver tumors appeared. Thankfully, none have. I should have insisted on RFA a few months ago but I was distracted by other things. Now, the tumor is too close to a large vein for RFA. I am doing the SIRT procedure to hopefully eliminate it or at least shrink it away from the vein so that RFA can be done.
