My gyn/onc has told me that

My gyn/onc has told me that a recurrence most often occurs in the vaginal cuff and within first 2 years post-surgery - for those 2 years I had appointments every 3 months with Paps at 6 month intervals - have passed that milepost and not seeing him every 6 months with yearly Pap - this will continue until 5 years out and than I think will become only a yearly check unless I have any symptoms - every appt inquires if I have had any vaginal discharge or bleeding - thus far negative

    Pap every 3 mos
I also am having a pap done every 3 mos for 2 years and then it will go to every 6 mos. My gyn/onc told me the same thing that a recurrance usually occurs within the first 2 years. I have had only an MRI and that was before I had surgery in April 2009. I have had no scans since. I finished my chemo and radiation Oct. 29, 2009. My gyn/onc says unless I haev some problems he doesn't do scans.

I finished treatments in May...I went for a CAT Scan in June, Pap/GYN Test last week and they ran my CA125 levels. My scan came back clear in June, and my Pap was normal and my CA125 came back an 8. All great news, praise God...

I am not sure what is the "norm"....but I know I was asked to go back to my regular GYN in November for another Pap and bloodwork, my Oncologist in November and back to the Surgeon/GYN in February....

Hope you are well and stay that way!

    Laurie thank you
I really do not know either what is the norm. My gyn/onc doc has absolutely no bed side manners. Excellent surgeon but boy o boy has no time to spend with you. I wonder If I should see another onc.
what do you think. You are doing wonderful. Keep it that way. June

    Pap or no pap
I just had this conversation with both my gyn-onc and PCP. They both said I don't need a pap since I don't have a cervix. I am getting Pet/CT on Sept 2 to check on my recurrence (found in subclavian lymph node) so figure this will tell status of UPSC.

Why do some of us get paps and others not? I don't understand this. Mary Ann

    Vaginal smear
I think it is a "vaginal smear" or "vaginal swab" that we get. Docs keep calling it a Pap because we're used to hearing that but I'm not sure that is technically correct. My gyn onc said it is done to double-check cancer hasn't spread to the vaginal cuff, a likely place for it to spread to, as I understand.

Very informative. Oh so that's what they are checking for, kinda makes sense. Thank you. Best health. June

    June - Thanks
    June,

I think all of us deserve doctors who not only excel at diagnosing and treatment, but who also have some sort of emphathetic personality.

My doctor (my regular GYN) sent me such a sweet email yesterday (I had sent an email to her updating her on my treatments) letting me know how she has been thinking of me. I thanked her for putting me in such good hands and she told me I deserved the best and she would always be looking out for me.

I wish you all find good doctors who treat the whole person not just an organ...

Both sound so lovely don't they? It is true that the most common place for the cancer to recur is the vaginal cuff. My doctor does a visual with a very bright light and has told me that often, he can see evidence of cancer even before the cells show up on lab results. I have found on the net photos of how cancer looks at the incision/scar site and is quite easy to see that cancer is forming. With that in mind, i would urge you to find a doctor who would be concerned enough about your well-being to take the few minutes for a good observation and to take a swab for the lab.

    happy hunting for a doc,

    Claudia
