Went to lunch with my loving wife today, only the second time I have eaten in public since treatment. Anyway had a large bowl of clam chowder and it really tasted good, also had a small salad and had a little problem with that. Anyway it is nice to be able to go out and eat somthing without feeling like a freek, always haking or gaging somthing up. So here is to continued healing. Go back down in two weeks for more biopsies, last pet came back with the hot area half the size it was two months ago and I am getting stronger so they want to test the area and make sure not C.

    Seafood Chowder
Good deal, I just made some seafood chowder this week. I wasn't sure how it would taste as I haven't made or eaten it for nearly two years now.

It was awesome, some fresh grouper, shrimp, scallops and crab meat. A few chopped potatoes & onion, a little corn, celery, and bacon for seasoning, simmer that all down in a little water. Then mix in some evaporated milk, a little butter, and simmer for a few more. Mixing all of those flavors together. Then just a touch of Sherry over the top when you dip out a nice sized bowl.

    MMMM,
    John

Glad to hear you had a delicious lunch! I love all the creamy & bisque soups, they seem to taste good, go down easy, and great for calories! Wishing you healing and good results with the biopsies. Prayers, Patty

    Clam chowder
When I was about two months out of treatment, I saw an ad in our local weekly about a waterman who was selling bushels of Delaware Bay oysters right off the boat. Up until the 1950s the bay had a thriving oyster crop, but a disease really devastated the population, and the fishery is still very limited.
Anyway, I dearly love oysters, so I went down to the dock and bought a half-bushel. I sat out on my patio, shucking them one by one, listening to the Canada geese flying over and just enjoying life in general.
I ate a few right out of the shell -- couldn't deal with Tabasco or horseradish at the time -- but I made a big pot of oyster stew out of the rest. I used real cream in order to jack up the calorie content, and boy howdy was it good.
Congratulations on the milestone, mkbrad, and may you have many more.
BTW, oysters on the half-shell slide down real good!

    Oysters
Hmmm, another treat I haven't tried for awhile now...

There is a good buffet close to home that has great Sushi. We eat there occasionally on the way home from work. I believe that the sushi with a little Ginger root, Wasabi and Kikoman Soy Sauce is every bit as good as always. But it did take me a while to get there, the rice had originally been a little starchy for me.

    Best,
    John

    Clam Chowder
    Brad,

Congrats on the second time out eating in public since treatment. I am new just beginning chemo August 20th so I know eventually the eating in public may be an issue for me.

Just had to note glad you go to enjoy some clam chowder. Not sure where you are located but living in Texas now I surely miss a good bowl of either new england or manhattan clam chowder.

Positive thoughts I am done treatment by end of November and can take a trip to NJ to enjoy some clam chowder.

    Here's to eating out!
    Brad,

So glad you are out and about. One of my best meals post treatment was a bowl of salmon bisque at the Ahwahnee Hotel in Yosemite. Delicious. Bummed I had to leave the bread on the table though. Continue to enjoy life! Eat out often.

    Three Words
    The Food Channel....

When I was to my point of not being able to eat for several weeks....I must have watched and recorded all of The Food Channels...Best Bar-B-Ques, Man VS Food, Anthony Bordaine...lol. If I could have produced any saliva at all, I would have been drooling all over the place..

    Best,

    About the Food Channel
When I was in treatment at Johns Hopkins, I watched a lot of Food Channel programs, particularly Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives. The host had visited a place in Baltimore called Chaps Pit Beef, which is only about two miles from the cancer center. I'd never had pit beef before (it's a Baltimore thing) but I vowed that once I could eat again, I'd go there.
It was a real victory for me to finally go there and have a pit beef sandwich, and I still stop by from time to time when I go back for a checkup.

    mexican food
    Brad
I too can now eat clam chowder. It is a great meal and lots of calories. I just ate my first mexican dinner, huevos rancheros! Couldn't eat the refried beans but the eggs were great and the rice was good but had to flush with a lot of water. We do take out, not ready to try the restraurant experience yet. You are a bold man !!
    Good luck

    I keep trying new things.
I have tried the mexican food thing and it burned the heck out of my mouth, egg drop soup has been a mainstay for about the last month. Oysters, yuk yuk, I have never had the taste for them. I watch the food channel all the time tying to entice my appatite. I watched during treatment but the seafood commercials especially the lobster ones really had my mouth trying to water. Have not tryed any yet because meat has been such a pain to eat, but soon. Going to Oregon crabbing next month.

Congrat's on dining out! My family can hardly wait for me to say I am ready! Tonight my daughter mentioned she missed our lunches & dinner's out together. I am eating mostly everything so I suppose it's time for me to take the plunge. You are giving me incentive to finally caving in. Taking another big step is a good thing!
