5 days Post Op

Day 5 post op and everything is going ok. I did make a call to the uro to ask a question. During bowle movements I have an overwhelming urge to pee along side the cath. I want to know if it ok to let it go or if I need to pinch it off. It would feel so good to let it pour out but I dont know yet. There has been a slight bit of blood alongside the cath but they say that is normal.
The pain in my shoulders has finally gone away and I must say that was the worst pain of it all. My back is a little sore but I think that is from sleeping in the recliner to many days. I might try my bed tonight.
I have an appointment on Thurs to get the cath out...HOPEFULLY. I am really looking forward to that. Even with the cath I do have the urge to pee.

    Both urge to pee and some blood. Drink a lot of water. Mu doc gave me Toviaz (for over active bladder mgt) and that helped. Glad all is well. You will be new man when the cath comes out

    SOUNDS LIKE EVERYTHING IS NORMAL. I TOO HAD BLOOD IN THE CATH.BUT THE DOC SAID DON'T WORRY ABOUT THAT. I DIDN'T PINCH ANYTHING OFF AND JUST LET IT FLOW. AFTER THE CATH COMES OUT YOU WILL FEEL MUCH BETTER AND SLOWLY BUT SURELY ALL THINGS WILL BEGIN TO NORMALIZE. DO THE KEGELS WHEN THE CATH COMES OUT AND HOPEFULLY YOUR URINARY CONTROL WILL WORK JUST FINE-----WISHING YOU A SPEEDY RECOVERY--DAN

    I had the urge to pee most of the time I had the cath in, uncomfortable but tolerable. I also had blood and some pee get around the cath but that is normal as well. The worst thing was one night the cath quit draining and I had to flush it to get it working again. Drink lots of water to keep it flowing. After the cath was removed I had to use a depends for two days and then just a few pads a day for a couple more days. I am 4 weeks post-op and use just one pad a day and have almost complete control. Do your kegal exercises after the cath is removed, I am convinced that helps to recover quickly.

    Hope you get rid of the cath Thursday. I hated the cath and was glad to get it out. Remember the time it takes to regain continence can really vary between people. I wished I hadn't heard and read so many guys saying they were dry from day one or dry within 2 weeks. I struggled for awhile and really beat myself up over it. Took me 3 months to get out of diapers and another 3 months to get off pads. At 6 months, other then occasional "trouser track" after voiding (which I had at times before surgery), I'm completely dry and pad free. Hope it's not a struggle for you but be patient with yourself if your not dry right away.

    Hope you continue to feel better each day.

    Good advice, Ezra. My case of PCa followed my brother's by 7 months so I had a good idea what to expect along the way. Took him three months to regain continence. Took me about 4. When I was feeling down about not having regained continence yet, my brother told me to track my progress by the week - not by the day. Tough to see progress day-to-day but I did notice improvement week-to-week. Used Depends at night and pads by day immediately after cath removal. After a month or so, found myself sleeping through the night and dry in the morning so I ditched the Depends and went to pads 24/7 for another few months. Along the way, I caught a cold. There's nothing like coughing and sneezing to wreak havoc with your control ! That was about a two week setback. Cath removal, for me, was "liberation day" because I felt I could go out in public again without taking baby steps. I referred to the cath and its bag as my plastic ball-and-chain. Good riddance to it.
