Welcome to the board!
I've been living with a cowboy for almost 26 years. We worked on a real working cattle ranch early in our marriage for nearly 10 years.
They do have dude ranches around here in Idaho and some in Montana. In fact, one of the old ranches we worked on was sold as a dude ranch. People come from all over to help with cattle, taste some great ranch cookhouse food. Buffalo around here are either pets, but you can see them in the wild in Yellowstone National Park which isn't too far from where I live.
Love and Hugs,
Holly0 -

Great to meet you it sounds great must be exciting that kind of life isn't ?
Best!
was the best and I'd go back in a heartbeat. My husband has been cowboying all his life. When we married, we moved to Montana the next day. Lock, stock and barrel. We lived for years without electricity or running water. We did have a creek outside the cabin and a fresh spring on the mountain. Had to make the time go by usually by fishing or hanging out with our kids. Our kids were really young then. In fact, one wasn't even born. They had no television influence and they loved playing outside. There were some downsides to living that kind of life. Our cabin's chinking had major holes and the mice ran rampant. We had to deal with bears, elk, deer and other wildlife. We had a skunk that lived under our bedroom floor. At night, we listened to a battery operated radio with very sketchy reception. Sally Jesse Raphael was one of our favorites to listen to. She was an interesting personality.
My oldest daughter attended a one room school house. Something they don't have anymore. There were 8 grades in that one room. She loved it. With all 8 grades, there were about 15 kids that attended school.
Civilization was about 70 miles away. I never really got to town very often. It was too cold where we lived to grow a garden. It averaged only 14 frost free days a year.
The ranch that we worked on was over 64,000 acres. We had over 6000 mother cows and about 400 bulls. We trailed to high country in the spring after branding, we trailed them back to the main ranch in the fall. Weaned calves in the fall and calved in the winter. One winter, with windchill, it was 90 degrees Fahrenheit below zero. When it was that cold, I had a lot of calves running around inside my house trying to get warm as well as in the barn and calving shed.
I cooked on an old wood cook stove and the kids took their baths on top of this stove after dishes were done in a huge galvanized tub. They thought that was the greatest adventure ever.0 -

You bring up memories of us kids, bathing in the "horse trough", lol, it was a galvanized tub that Mom would heat up water for. Thank goodness, I was 6th in line and not the 9th.
We also had our outhouse, but we girls got to have indoor toilet, it was a box, that had a hole cut in it, and a toilet seat at the top, underneath was a coal bucket, which every day we would empty into the outhouse. LMAO, those were the days, or rather the YEARS!!!0 -

I lived in Alaska, we didn't have buffalo, but we had horses, cows, chickens, etc...
I used to ride the Rodeo I did the gymkhana and barrel racing, it was a wonderful life, spent in our cowboy boots and hats.
Now, I'm "civilized" and wear high heels and skirts, but I would give half a lifetime away to go back to my simpler way of life, the cowboy, cowgirl days. I would ride one of my horses to town, hitch them up at the post office, get the mail and ride home again (it was only three and 1/2 miles each way).0 -

But little beat cold to me ! I rather prefer cowboy style with our wonderful Mediterranean weather !

Right now, we live about 2 hours south of where the ranch is. I guess that translates into about 130 miles. We're in southeast Idaho. About an 1 1/2 hours from Yellowstone Park and 2 hours from Jackson Hole, Wyoming.0 -

We love the ocean
Both **** and I love the ocean. We love to cruise on our boat, fish, pull the kids on the tube, snorkle, surf. **** loves to surf and he gets out as much as possible. I love to paddle Hawaiian outrigger canoes (6 person canoes). Really, just get us in the ocean and we're happy.
Aloha,

I also love the ocean. I love to sit on the beach and listen. Just listen. I bet my blood pressure goes down oodles when I'm there.
I do have a fear of going in the ocean though. I was just talking to my sister this morning. My daughter is taking me to Maui this December and we talking of things to do while there. We were talking about snorkeling and I told her I don't think I could do it. Sharks are my phobia. The movie JAWS has pretty much ruined me for life. I think I was 11 years old when it came out in theaters. I went to see it and it's totally freaked my brain out ever since. Dang that Peter Benchley. I mean, it freaked me out so bad, I couldn't even take a bath without thinking something was going to come up through the drain! Funny, huh?
Up near our summer house is a reservoir that a lot of people use for recreation. I can't swim in there either because bull sharks can swim in fresh water, too. Now, how they'd get in the reservoir would be a trick, but still can't swim in there, either. Jeez, I'm a mess. LOL0 -

Holly,
I am so glad you are going to be in Maui. You will love it! Don't get down on yourself if you're not comfortable in the water. Take in all the beauty and take it all on your terms. I know here on Oahu we have these little submarines that just go a few feet under water. I've heard you get a good view from there. I am not sure if they have those on Maui.
My sister had the same reaction to Jaws and she is just about your age. I think that movie really had an effect on a number of people.
I am aware that sharks are a possibility any time I am in the ocean but I have been in and around the ocean my whole life and so have most of the people I know. No one I know has been bothered by a shark so I figure the odds are with me.
Take care.
Aloha,
Kathleen0
