Today we found out my little brother has leukemia. I am not sure what type as all he remembers is that they said leukemia. He has his first appt on wed and I would appreciate any help with what questions to ask the doctor.

This is incredibly hard for me and my whole family as I was diagnosed with uterine sarcoma 6 weeks ago today. I am cancer free now, but it really sucks that cancer doesn't want to loosen its hold on my family.

My little brother is only 24 years old and has a lot longer to go. I understand how he is feeling as I was just there. However, you have dealt with leukemia yourselves and I would appreciate tips on what you wish you had known and asked.

    Hello mmurcia2000,
    Welcome to the boards! I have been a member here for quite a few years and have just returned recently. I am an acute lymphoblastic leukemia survivor - I was diagnosed when I was 21. Here are a few tidbits of information that might help you and your brother:

    There are four major types of leukemia: acute, chronic, lymphoblastic, and myelogenous.

    Ask the doctor:

    Which type of leukemia do I have?
    Will I need to be hospitalized?
    Are there leukemia studies of which I can become part?
    Can we be assigned a social worker?
    Are there foods I should stop eating?
    Are there foods I should eat more?
    If I take over the counter vitamins, must I stop taking them?
    Will I need a bone marrow transplant?
    Can I be treated at a National Cancer Institute Comprehensive Cancer Center?
