TOENAILS
Mary, never had anything like that happen yet. I learned a long time ago that nails are actually hair follicles stuck together with a glue produced by the body. I don't know if it has anything to do with it or not,but I guess it is something to think about.0 -

Well in researching it I found out that chemo will affect both fingernails and toenails because they are growing and it attacks everything that is growing. It said most people don't lose their fingernails but many do lose their toenails because of the pooling effect of medication in the lower extremities. My fingernails are fine now but toward the end of treatment I remember the nail beds turned really dark red or purple but that is gone now. Guess I never knew this. Oh well I didn't like my toenails that much anyway and now I have new ones. have a good day everyone and I apologize if I have anyone examining their hands and feet...Mary0 -

Dam Mary, that is wierd!!!! did you ask the Onc, never heard of that one!!!!!
LOL I know right? I plan on mentioning it to him when I go back in August just for fun. It's a wonder it hasn't caused some psychological damage or something. I think it may have for my daughters who are both horrified by the whole thing, especially if I make them look at the fallen off nail!!0 -

Hey Mary, I have the same problem. I started losing my toenails right around the time I finished chemo. Actually got an infection under a few because they were loose. Pretty scary at the time because here I had an active infection while still getting chemo. But my Onc wasn't worried and I was fine after the ped. doc removed them. But really ugly and creepy. I had a few nails that turned blood red, the entire nail not just the bed. Currently I'm having problems with my finger nails, very dry, soft and shattering......... odd as I always had great finger nails.0 -

I can imagine that was scary cuz they warn you so much about watching for infection. Glad it all turned out OK. My fingernails are the same as yours, very soft and peeling. Wish they would warn us about that. I thought I was falling apart feet first. Mary0 -

My fingernails have been breaking too for some months. I would have been horrified if that had happed to my toes. You take everything so well and with such humor, you must be fun to live with. Me, I'm a basketcase most of the time. Just sent you a note.0 -

Hi Merry,
I think this is something you should discuss with your Oncologist or Oncology team. I don't think this sis something you want to sit back on. I have learned within my 18 months of treatment and 3 yrs as a survivor: if you question it, you should bring it to your Oncology team's attention right away.
I speak with lots of other nhl survivors. I have never heard of anyone experiencing his/her nail failing off.
Please let us know the status.
Take care.0 -

My nails got really discolored during treatment, and getting manicures totally didn't help. The stuff would chip off in a matter of days. It's part of the treatment, and should clear up when you finish.0 -

Good to hear from you. Hope all is well. I will definitely let the MD's know about it. There is a new nail underneath each one and no signs of infection and no pain. Thanks for the post and you take care too.0 -

Oh no I didn't want to add anymore to the list. But in my own warped defense I did research it online and it is well documented and also depends on the type of treatment you had. One of the important things is to report any signs of infection and to let the nails fall off naturally and not pull them off!!!!! As if. Mary0 -

Thanks. I am finished now and I think they are healed and the old nails just started falling off. Oh the fun of treatment. But thank God for it!0 -

I had spoken with both my oncologist and my pediatrist, my onc really could have cared less as long as the infection was under contol and my counts were good. My foot doc thought the Vincristeen and neuropothy may also have played a role. I had problems with my fingernails 18 yrs ago when treated for my breast cancer. but this is much worse. Oh well, the chemo worked and it's just nails. And they will eventually grow out/back, LOL.
Good reason to not have to do dishes.

I laughed so hard my family thinks I am nuts sitting at the kitchen table laughing by myself. You are too funny!!!! Is that weird or what? That's where I first noticed that something was amiss, my thumb nails discolored. I didn't lose any fingernails though just the toenails and since there are always socks and shoes you may come up from the basement. Still laughing. Mary0 -
