Do you think if a man had a testicle removed he would be going home the same day?
I had immediate reconstruction and remained in hospital for 4 days. I couldn't imagine being tossed out the same day as having a mastectomy, it is rather traumatic, emotionally and physically. But yeah, if I were, certainly a chocolate shake and extra fries might have been in order.0 -

It was weird and to this day, hard to believe. That's why I'm really hoping this isn't practiced frequently, and by the responses, it looks like it isn't...except in central Texas...HA!0 -

I don't know, but my hysterectomy with a hip to hip incision (21 years ago) was a 15 hour stay. They sure wouldn't do that to a man.0 -

I do not remember the ride home either. My problem is a monopoly. There is one hospital, Scott & white, a very large learning facility. I was surgical patient 1420. They also offer insurance rates that no other company can compete with. They own everything including the local shopping mall. So, they have the facilities, doctors, insurance, and of course the lawyers. Hence drive- thru procedures.0 -

Sorry, but i think that you not being able to stay is horrible. And yes, it is a major surgery. Its different for everyone, so for the first timers who are about to go through their surgery, dont think this is going to be your situation. My double mastectomy was a nightmare. I was in so much pain that my blood pressure reached 189 to 190 over like i dont even remember the bottom number. But if you have alot of pain, your blood pressure will raise. I was in the hospital for two days after mine. I couldnt imagine even what having to go right home would have been like for me. I cant believe that they are not keeping you at least one night. They are even going to be keeping me when i have my implants done. Wow! I would ask your doctor if he could contact the insurance company to see if they could make an exception. Keep us posted and i will pray for you.
Take care

Outpatient Observation
I stayed overnight and left in less than 24 hours. I was given a paper that said that my billing status was Outpatient Observation, "even though you are in a regular bed and receive some of the same services as a patient with an inpatient billing status." It also said that I may be liable for some charges that are not covered under Part B Medicare. I had been told in advance of the surgery date that Medicare requires the surgery to be done in the hospital. I hope Medicare pays!
