Why is Holland so green?

Because, first thing in the morning, the sun is up and shining...birds singing, etc...

Then, about noon, it gets rather humid. Still blue skies, but for the Dutch, they know what's coming...

About 5 or 6pm, the sky is completely cloudy. An hour later, it rains. Not JUST rain, tho...POURING rain, SHEETS of it, with wind, thunder, and lightning!!!

By morning, the sun will be up and shining, and all of the plants, grass, etc will be miraculously 2" taller!!!

SOOOO, it's almost time for cows!!! YEA!!!

    It sounds like Holland has a great natural irrigation system! Our gardens gould use that right now.

    Standing next to the Dutch, almost shoulder to shoulder, are the Danes. Average height in Denmark is 6 feet (1.83 m). Americans, who once were the tallest people, have fallen in stature and are on average about 5 feet, 10 inches (1.78 m).

    Researchers have attempted to account for what makes a certain country have the tallest people and conclude that factors for height include a combination of genetics and nutrition. The Dutch, several hundred years ago, were some of the tallest people in the world. Uneven distribution of wealth, poor nutrition, and years of bad crops certainly contributed to keeping the Dutch shorter for many years. From a genetic standpoint, though, the Dutch could have been the tallest people sooner with appropriate nutrition, especially during early childhood years.

    Those who study these statistics suggest that the Dutch emphasis on early childhood care, a diet rich in dairy products and thus high in protein, and a fairly even distribution of wealth have contributed to making the Dutch the world’s tallest people. In contrast, in America, pockets of poverty, which contribute to poor childhood nutrition and lack of available healthcare, as well as immigration of shorter racial groups to America, have resulted in a shorter average height.

    Being the tallest people in the world is not without disadvantage. In recent years, the Dutch have had to make changes to building codes in order to provide taller doorframes, and more “height” friendly aspects to each new building and auto design. Further, the measurement is “average height” which means some people far exceed 6 feet, 1 inch. Some people are significantly taller and may stand nearly 7 feet (2.13 m) tall, which can make traveling in the average car quite uncomfortable.

    I've been experiencing this for almost 20 years...lol...

    My dutch beau is 6'3". In California, when we go places, he is usually fairly easy to spot...a bit taller than most...But, when we are in The Netherlands, well, first of all I feel like I just stepped into a rather deep hole (I'm 5'4"), but also I can no longer see him...even the women, as you just pointed out, are at least as tall, if not taller...and the men? 6'6" and up is not unusual at all...

    Now, the other side effect to all of this height is that this is one of the few places in the world where you can buy VERY large shoes...right off the rack!!! Size 12, for a woman, actually has style...and an assortment to pick from! And then men's sizes, well...size 13 and 14 are there, and not just sneakers...dress shoes, as well!

    And the beds in the hotels, mattresses are longer...and bikes...many ladies' bikes have 28" tires.

    I feel like I have stepped into the 'land of the giants'! Lucky for me, many dutch women my age are shorter...so at least I can still find clothes that fit...
