Popcorn!!
Hi Donna!
My husband "loves" popcorn and has no problem eating it! I was really nervous when he first decided to try it. I just thought that popcorn might be difficult to handle. But, with him, all is fine. He eats popcorn just about every week!
My recommendation is to start slowly and see how it goes. I know it is hard to try new things, especially when the effect can be so uncomfortable. But, at least for one fellow EC survivor, popcorn is a great treat and is frequently enjoyed! I should add that, when we are home, we use fairly plain (but still yummy!) popcorn, usually opting for Orville Redenbacher's Smart Pop Kettle Corn. It is "slightly sweet & slightly salty" according to the package. My husband has also had movie theatre popcorn when we go out, and that has not presented any problems either.
Hope this note helps you to feel like you can try to satisfy your craving!!

P. S. Best price for it is at Walmart or when the grocery store is having a sale!0 -

Trisha,
Thanks so much. I had visions of it balling up in my new tube. I can tolerate a lot of different foods but this one was scaring me. Glad your husband is doing so good. How long has it been for him since surgery? I am 7 months out and trying to gain some weight. thanks for the shopping tips too. take care,

Donna,
this is so funny cause you and Jeff have had the same cravings at the same time after surgery, He ate it everynight until he was having some problems and his gastro doctor made him quit because it wasn't digesting and backing up in his bile duct, but everyone is different. Have you had the craving for pickles, or pickled okra, or olives yet? One night I SWEAR TO GOD, Jeff was pregnant I had to go to the store just to buy him pickles and pickled okra, and in two days he ate the whole jar, I think its something to do with your new stomach being adjusted and your body is craving these. Let me know if you did or doing this also.
Try and see what you can with popcorn, but another advice is don't eat wheat bread or peelings on the potatoes, that cause problems also. Any more info just ask remember been there done that.
Glad you are doing well

Hi, again!
I can so relate to your concerns about the popcorn . . . I had the same images in my head about what it would do to my husband!! So funny that you feel the same! I still have concerns sometimes, but he has never had any problems with the popcorn. Sometimes, he has movie candy with it . . . red licorice seems to be fine, but the Milk Duds are not!!
I have written about my husband on the user profile page . . . just click on my user name next to this post and you will find all the details. Basically, diagnosis was November 2007, surgery was March 2008.
My husband still has not put much weight back on. We are still working on it. He just can't seem to get in the number of meals and healthy calories per day that he should be having, and he is not really fond of supplement drinks. Snacks don't do it either, so it is a struggle that we continue to encounter. He is healthy, but just really thin! Doesn't like himself so light and with no muscles. He has always been very athletic and in-shape, so the challenges we face now are frustrating for him. He is really looking forward to getting back into shape . . . his plans had been sidelined by a recurrence in December 2009 and treatment for it during the first part of this year, until May. He is still working full-time, so he is juggling a lot, but, hopefully, he can now get back on track this summer!
Let us know how you do with the popcorn!! Hope you enjoy it!

I've not had a problem with
I've not had a problem with popcorn. I just make sure I don't swallow any kernels. Reading some of the other post--it is funny how my taste changed for some things. I never cared for anything "hot' before my surgery. Now I love it, so I have to be careful and not overdo.
Good news---I gained a pound at the Drs today. It felt great not to have lost any!0 -

Hi,
I have had cravings for olives but I never ate okra before so don't want it now. I do want to have pickled herring, I am Polish and we love it esp at New Year's. I will be careful with the kernels and eating too much. That is so funny about Jeff eating a whole jar of okra. About the weight gain, Trisha, I keep staying under 120 and I was a nice 147 before chemo and surgery so I know how your husband feels. Have all this slack skin hanging from my arms. Now I think I read or was told that one third of EC surgical pts never really gain too much weight. But I am hoping to get up to 125 just because I liked my weight before and like to have some meat on my bones. My big thing I am eating a lot of now is creamy peanut butter and that has helped me gain a couple of pounds. It is funny to hear of cravings. When I was in the hospital I started to get visions of bubbling soda in my mind and was dying to take a long drink which didn't happen for a long time. Trish I will check out your page and also Sandy yours too. Great you gained at the drs, makes you feel good. take care all and thanks,

After losing 98 lbs my skin is very wrinkled; but it doesn't hang anywhere where I would need cosmetic surgery. My husband and I laugh over the fact that I just need ironing. So good to laugh over wrinkled skin because praise the Lord, it covers a disease free body!0 -

Robert has been having cravings for pickles and watermelon! lol! I had to peel the skin off the pickle for him but it sure cured his craving. I think we'll wait a little bit on the popcorn since he's only a couple of weeks out.
