Will i always have this spit cup? :(
Hey, Thanks for everyone's replies! I truly, truly thank you from the bottom of my heart!!
Have new question? Right the tough part is getting sleep, but it seems that I have constant secretions; not necessarily thick but constant. I know I'm not swallowing like normal right now such as frequency; so I have constant spit..using a spit cup and wash cloths to wipe mouth. But the trick getting sleep and drool/spit build up. I have noticed that when I was using the pain meds it dried my mouth and allowed me to fall asleep eventually for a hour or two. Should I try benadryl? Also, what about the liquid mucinex?
Charles
Thanks! Your Rochester Gypsie!

Drool Cup
Reminds me of the old Saturday Night Live bit for the drool cup.
Before taking any meds to try and help with this talk to your doctors. Mine slowly went away the further out from treatment I got. I would put a towel on my pillow so I wouldn't have to wash the pillow case daily, I could just replace the towel in the morning.
If you have a water bed just make sure that isn't what is leaking as I had this problem but when the part of the bed by my feet was all wet, I knew it wasn't just from my mouth.0 -

I went through cases of tissue during treatment & quite a bit after. I was constantly spitting up mucous, now it has totally stopped. As the day's go by you will notice that these
problem's are no longer. I just wish I could get a bit of saliva back.0 -

I had a smallish trash can dedicated for all of my slobbering and spitting. It lasted a few weeks and was worst at the end. Then I noticed small improvements and then no more need for the bucket. Sleeping was hard. I put a towel under my face. I also watched a lot of late nite tv shows...
It does get better though.0 -
Mucinex
Charles
I concur with everyone else here. It does go away. I'm eight weeks out, and with the mucous gone, I am as dry as a bone. Almost (ALMOST) wish I had some back. Do stay away from the mucinex and similar products. I tried it once, and it stripped out all the protective mucous and burned my throat pretty badly. At this point for you, mucous is definitely better than no-mucous.
Hang in there. It will get better.

That's interesting about the Mucinex? I was hacking so much that it was causing dry heaves and some acid reflux which burned throat and may prevent healing. I think the Mucinex has helped prevent that! I guess I will not using it so much! I guess what works for another is another may not work for others. Thanks for the posts!

Charles,
My doc gave me nexium for the acid reflux. It was only a problem during treatment and for a couple weeks after. I assumed it was because my pipes and valves were all burned and swollen and not working right. I don't need to take it any more.

Hi everyone,
Evan has been out of treatment since Sept.09 and he still has alot of saliva. He put a trash can beside the bed and still carries a spit cup everywhere he goes. He asked the Dr. about something for it and he recommended the patch you can get for motion sickness. Don't know if it works because they don't want him to start using it until he sees his ENT Dr. this month. But it's worth asking your Dr. about. I know that Evan would pretty much try anything to see if it works, including biting on a lemon (didn't work for him, but its supposed to help slow the saliva). Will let you know if the patches work, if they ok him using them.
Hang in there and good luck,
Amy & Evan0
