IODINE FREE DIET
Did you give up soy products? How many calories did you eat? Any input would be so appreciated. My thyroid tumor was inoperable so this is critical for me that this second chance of shrinking this large tumor. thanks so much

the way i managed to get
the way i managed to get through it was i took all saturday and sunday and cooked meals and boxed and put them in fridge and freezer so they could be microwaved or such.
as for calories i kept roughly the same amount of calories as i did before
restaurants is going to be tough. to be honest even salids there can be "bad" cause of some of the additives
trust me it is nearly imposible to keep yourself on the low iodine diet0 -

Thank you for your reply. I quickly found out you are right. I have a muscle disorder so I can't get out and shop or cook. But I have a girl who helps me--and she went to Fairway Market today and got me salt free and iodine free foods. I am mainly going to eat chicken for protein, lots of vegetables and juice and nuts and wheat germ. Thyca said I shouldn't have soy--and my doctor said don't eat fish given the oil spill. Thanks for your tips. How long did you stay on the iodine free diet--two weekbs before the treatment or the four months while on the treatment once a week as well? Thanks so much and good luck.0 -

I've been on the LID for several days now and found the recipes in the thyca cookbook very helpful. It is so important to read the labels on everything. I am concentrating on fresh fruits and veggies with some chicken, beef and pork. I couldn't find salt free peanutbutter so I made some in the blender - not bad. You are right no soy, nothing from the sea, no dairy, no egg yolks, no processed foods. I'm giving up eating out until after my treatment. I am not worrying about calories since I am sure I won't starve and I know I am eating fewer than I usually do. I'm hoping this is an opportunity to drop a few pounds. I am doing my best to look at this in a positive light and taking it a day at a time. Good luck to you.0 -

You are right--this is a great opportunity to get weight off. I was so motivated when I got my diagnosis--I gave up sugar, diet soda and processed foods right away. This diet is a challenge. But I am praying I will come out healthier in general. I am a vegan by taste. So I miss cheese, etc. But I want to give this iodine treatment the best chance possible. Thanks so much for sharing. I was curious if you are staying on this diet for four months. That's the length of my iodine treatment--or just two weeks to prepare for the treatment. I had diced up chicken with peppers and onions and mushrooms the other day--and it was really tasty. My teenage daughter even liked it! Best of luck to you. I hope your treatment is a big success. God Bless.0 -

i was told (and how my doctors did it) that 6 hours after they give you radioactive iodine that you are off the diet and back to "normal foods"
being that they gave me what they said was a larger dose (i consider it huge but) of 175mCi. i was over the limit of what they could send home so i had to stay in the hospital for 2 days of waiting and realizing there really isnt anything on TV good to watch
the treatment in my case was let me pull up my blog and cut and paste
.....
On the 3rd of May 2010 I went up to Madigan for a scan of my body for radiation followed by my first uptake dose of radiation (RI-131 UPTAKE) 8.1 uCi of I-131 t1/2= 8 days.
On the 4th of May 2010 I was back at Madigan for a radiation count on my thyroid followed by my second uptake dose of radiation (RI-123 UPTAKE) 2.8 mCi I-123 t1/2= 13.2 hours
May 5th 2010 was the big day they did a multitude of CT scans (multiple scans over a 3 hour period) followed by a long conversation with the doctors about what they were going to give me. After getting checked into the radiation isolation room #625, they brought me my dose of radiation 175 mCi of I-131 t1/2= 8 days. I was hospitalized and bored out of my skull till Friday May 7th when they released me (I had to get to less than 7mr/hour at 1 meter)
.....
this is not chemotheropy but Radioactive Iodine treatment.. being that thyroid tisue is the only part of your body that Radioactive Iodine will go to and stay at. they are able to give you your dose in 1 shot and it stays there as opposed to Chemotheropy that is a multiple visit thing.
i havent heard of anyone being on a multi treatment RAI except if they get a re-occourance of cancer later in life.
I have been told that my scan looks clean but they will not be able to tell me for sure till october-december when they do the next set of tests (i will not need to go on Low Iodine Torture i mean diet)
good luck on your treatment and remember YOU WILL beat this0 -

Mine told me that I could go back to real food 72 hours after my RAI dose was given. I was on it 3 weeks before my scan and then another week for the scan dose, scan, RAI, and the 72 hours.0 -

This may seem like a silly question, but, is granulated sugar ok? I just started to diet today in preparation for scan and probable treatment. I have read everything I can find and see no mention of sugar.0 -

update low iodine diet
I stuck strictly to the thyca lo iodine diet for two weeks and then went for my iodine treatment to one of the top docs in this are in the country. He wanted to see some of my scans on discs and postpone the beginning of the iodine treatment. well as it turns out they did a study at this top hospital and didn't find any significant differene between being strictly on the diet or more flexible. so i only have to be on it a short time before treatment and a few days after. I can have soy. I can have some milk.they are fanatical about red dye being in supplements and tomato juice and products tho.no salt and no seafood0
