Things Cancer Survivors Want You To Know

There are no other experiences in life that will prepare us for a cancer diagnosis and the changes it will bring. So here are a few things people living with cancer and cancer survivors want you to know -

**Living with cancer can feel like being chased by a tiger through the rainforest. I started out running as fast and furious as my feet would carry me. Even though I have made some head-way, I still feel like the tiger is lurking around the next corner ready to pounce. Some days, I have loads of energy and think I will outrun this beast. Other days, I just get tired of keeping one-step-ahead and want to give up.

**Please do not stay away because you are scared of saying the wrong thing or think you may be intruding in my life. It's okay to just ask if I feel like talking about my situation. It is also okay to call and offer help. Just ask me "Would this be intruding?" Companionship and connection with loved ones means more to me now than ever.

**The scary parts just keep on coming. After the initial shock wears off, I still need emotional and physical support. There are scans, diagnostic procedures, biopsies, tests, and changes in treatment that start the anxiety all over again. Just because I am miles into this journey doesn't mean I can do it on my own.

**Sometimes I need to vent without anyone offering solutions, judgments, or opinions. One of the nicest things you can do for me is to hold my hand and listen until I finish getting it all off my chest.

    good post!
Please refrain from telling me stories about your brother, sister, neighbor, etc who had the same exact cancer as I have because I'm going to ask how they are doing and when you tell me they died it just bums me out!

Cancer is not contagious, so please give me a hug!
