HI I NOTICED IN YOUR POSTS YOU'VE MENTIONED GOING ON CRUISES. WELL, I AM GOING ON MY FIRST CRUISE EVER AND I WAS WONDERING ABOUT SEASICKNESS MEDS.
DO YOU TAKE ANYTHING? IS THERE ANYTHING THATS NOT SAFE TO TAKE WITH ONE KIDNEY?
I DON'T KNOW IF I SHOULD BRING SOMETHING WITH ME OR JUST SEE WHAT HAPPENS ON THE SHIP, I UNDERSTAND THEY HAVE MEDS TO GIVE YOU IF YOU NEED THEM. I'M JUST CONCERNED WITH THE ONE KIDNEY AND TOXICITY. I'VE NEVER TAKEN ANY SEASICKNESS MEDS EVEN BEFORE MY SURGERY.
ITS BEEN ONE AND 1/2 SINCE KIDNEY REMOVAL.

    Icemantoo to the rescue
    The last 8 cruises I have not been sea sick, but I have bonine as a backup as these cruises were on larger ships. Back in 1982 I was on a 700 passanger ship in rough seas and had bonine after a drink (I do not think you are supposed to do that) and that got me through the night. The only time I was sea sick was on a 125 passanger boat in 1999 and you do not want to here about that. As for post surgery I did have the flu on a cruise in 2004 or 2005 and the ship's doctor said I could not have motrin or advil because I only had one Kidney and these drugs were inflamatory. The only other concern was in 2003 when I was 6 months past surgery and the area around my incision was still swollen. Check with your doctor first as to any medicines you should or should not take as a result of only having 1 kidney which is different than having kidney disease. Meanwhile forget everything I said and enjoy the cruise.

    Thank you for your response, it sounds like you like to cruise. glad to hear it.
    i called my dr. and she said not to use the seasickness patch, but dramamine and bonine are safe. i can bring them or they have them on the ship. i also read that just ginger, whether tea or lozenges can help. maybe the placebo effect.
    i already knew about not taking ibuprofen, tylenol is safe for us cause it goes thru the liver. thats why they tell you not to drink while taking it.
    looking forward to the cruise, will let you know how i make out.

    'scuse me if I butt in. Just make sure that you have complete instructions on dosage.
    My daughter-in-laws parents did a cruise to Alaska. Someone told him to change his patch every day (instead of every 3 days). He got way more anti nausea meds than he should have and is still sick 2 weeks later. He had had DaVinci surgery for prostate cancer 2 years ago and had been doing well. His BP is low and he's still unable to go out and about.

    Good luck on your trip and be one of us living with cancer (post surgery).
