Sorry I had lumpectomy but followed by chemo and rads. I wish you the best and if you have any questions I'm here.0 -
Lumpectomy
I was diagnosed at Stage 1 grade 2, Invasive Ductal carcinoma. I had a lump 1.5 cm. I had a lumpectomy followed by radiation. My Dr. told me that when you have cancer, Having a lumpectomy plus radiation equals having a mastectomy. It was either, or, not Lumpectomy without radiation. I do know someone with DCIS that also had Radiation. Sending you Hugs, and best wishes! MARY0 -

Dear ziva,
Sorry why you're here.
I was diagnosed with DCIS and the only options I had were:
1) lumpectemy, radiation and tamoxifen
2) masectomy
The usual protocol is lumpectomy and radiation.
Bless you,

Zivagirl,
Because DCIS is non-invasive, chemo therapy is not a treatment option for DCIS.
I was diagnosed with DCIS in 2007. After I had my lumpectomy, I consulted with Dr. Michael Lagios, a world-renowned DCIS expert and pathologist that any one can consult with. He reassured me that because my score was low enough on the Van Nuys Prognostic Index, my recurrence risk was only 4 percent. Since radiation would have only reduced that risk to about 2 percent, it did not make sense for me to have it.
You can check out Dr. Lagios on his website. It is:http://www.breastcancerconsultdr.com/
Feel free to also send me a private message if you have questions or need more info.

Unfortunantly im going through the whole process...but i just wanted to tell ya sorry to hear about your diagnosis!
I feel the love as I return to this website. I admit that I was scared and stayed away for awhile but realize it can be very comforting. I was diagnosed with DCIS, very early stages on 3/23. Quadrectomy performed on 4/1 and I am now entering my last week of my 7 week radiation treatment. Although a little "crispy" ,,, and a little fatigued ... it has not been so bad. I went off hormone replacement immediately after diagnosis and have been told by Oncologist that Tamoxifin is not necessary because I accomplished the same goal eliminating the hormone replacement that I had been on for 9 years. I feel blessed but would like to know what to expect from others that have walked with this scenario before me. My heart and prayers are with all my sisters here.0 -

They thought I had DCIS until the final pathology report came in after my lumpectomy. I was then diagnosed with Invasive Ductal Carcinoma. It was caught early, so, I feel lucky. I then had rad treatments to kill any stray cancer cells left behind from the lumpectomy. I didn't need chemo thank goodness.
Good luck to you!0 -
I had dcis low grade had a
I had dcis low grade had a lumpectomy only no radiation. My Mom had dcis too dont know grade though she had radiation plus some tamoxifin. I choose not to do tamoxifin duto mom my stopped it because of bad side effects was scaredof that. Its been 5 yrs as of 4/10 since I was diagnosed and no recurrance. I felt if since I had a very low chance of it coming back why have radiation you can only radiate area 1x.if I every had cancer again in that breast I wld then have to have a mastectomy and wldnt hv the option to radiate0 -

Swalters,
Thank you so much for your reply. I was just dx'd Thurs, June 17 via stereotactic core biopsy pathology report which nurse/radiologist indicate is very low grade dcis (their words). No other testing dr. visits since that date. I will be taking all my films, reports biopsy slides to the University of Chicago for follow up.
I will contact Dr. Lagios' office at http://www.breastcancerconsultdr.com
I am hopeful I can have lumpectomy only with 6 month mammogram follow ups? How are you doing since your initial dx in 2007?0 -

How lucky you were not to have to undergo any further treatment. Where did you receive your dx and who performed your lumpectomy? Assume you are being followed up by frequent mammograms?
I'm finding making a choice of breast specialist is not so easy - although I'm leaning towards University of Chicago since I'm only an hour away.0 -

I had lumpectomy followed by rads--no chemo. Now I am on tamoxifen. Had a few
side effects at first, but they have lessened considerably. Best of luck in your treatment!0 -

I opted for agressive chemotherapy due to the size of lump - size of a Orange removed, after going in for a core-biospy, coming out with a lumpectomy ..
Please take a few moments and consult with a Breast Cancer Doctor and Oncologist ..read a few books, go on line .. familiarize yourself with options and treatment plans in your area.
I know it is confusing, overwhelming and now your world has been turned upside down .. take a deep breathe, get a booklet of paper and start making notes and questions. Take a sister, husband or friend with you to your first few appointments .. A tape recorder is a wonderful way to confirm what was relayed to you during your visits.
Good luck, and remember we are here for you 24/7 ..

dcis
I was dx in dec 2009. I had 2 lumpectomies and then 33 radiation treatments. I have been prescribed arimidex for 5 yrs but i have put off taking it for 1 month so far because i went on a vacation am afraid of the side effects. I already have hot flashes and I am worried that they will become worse and i heard there can be a lot of bone and joint pain. I think I am going to be brave and try it. the dr said if the side effects were really bad that i can stop but I just want to do all i can to keep it from coming back.0 -
DCIS
I was diagnosed with DCIS in January 2009. I had a lumpectomy--I was never given a stage. I thought about not doing radiation but my husband damn near had a hemorrhage so I had 33 rad treatments. I was given the option on taking tamoxifen which I took for 7 months but had life threatening side effects so I no longer take it. I have 6 month mammography that has been OK so far.
We all have choices, I'm Ok with the path I chose. Good luck to you.
