B39 Trial Study for radiation

I was offered to participate in a trial study called B39. The study is to determine if partial breast radiation 2x day for 5-10 days is as effective as whole breast radiation 1x day for 5-7 weeks. They especially wanted someone in my age group (43) because there haven't been very many in the study under 50.

Have any of you participated in this study? If so, which treatment did you get?

For those of you who have received the partial breast radiation, please tell me what it was like for you. After meeting with the Radiation onco yesterday, I feel like the partial would be a better choice for me either way because my tumor was in the left side, and I am rather large bosomed. The doc said she would get part of my heart in the whole breast radiation, and I'm worried about the effects of that.

Thank you, ladies for your help!

    Hi Julie,
My rad onc is one of the researchers for that study. He wanted to put me in the trail until we found that my sugery cavity was too large for any of the brachytherapy options except interstitial multicatheter type, so I couldn't be 'randomized'; I only had one choice. I was done in 5 days! And, like you, being large bosom-ed, the doc did not want to do whole breast, saying I'd fry so badly I probably couldn't finish, if that was they type of irradiation I chose.

Please visit this website, just for information on the options. It's all laid out here: www.arizona-breast-cancer-specialists.com A very extensive and informative website for the rad onc I went to. He wants to educate women and doctors on these procedures of breast conserving radiation therapies.

    I hope you post again.

    Julie -
Interesting - I hadn't heard of that one. My radiation oncologist was telling me that they are participating in a trial on some Canadian guidelines where some women would be getting 16 treatments but only to let me know that wouldn't apply to me so I would understand if I heard someone in the waiting area talking about it:0 With all of the new information out there about radiation vs. no radiation vs. options, it sounds like an important trial. Let us know how it goes if you go this route.....best wishes!
