Mixed Bag PET/CT update
I wish that I had definitive news to tell you. I write this all down to you because it helps me gain perspective. I have been feeling very good, the best in seven years. And yesterday and today, my tests were a mixed bag with knowns and unknowns. My rectal exam went very well. My GI surgeon says that "all's great!" My CEA, or tumor marker as measured in blood tests, is in normal ranges and has actually been going down (0.9 at this reading). My tumor marker was slightly elevated at diagnosis so my doctor considers it an accurate marker of tumor activity for me. The PET/CT has inconclusive results. Everywhere but the lungs look great but there are 3 nodules that grew (to 5mm, 6mm, and 9mm in size so still quite small) from previous PET/CTs. Only the 9mm lit up at 2.8 SUV.
The 9mm nodule can be biopsied, if possible. Factors influencing that are its location (near a major vessel) and that it is small and could be difficult to find. My doctor also said that biopsies will confirm cancer but cannot rule cancer out of nothing is found. Doing the biopsy requires a thoracic surgeon.
What now? Well, there's no rush. I see my other medical oncologist in Casper on July 1 for my regular 2 month check-up and can go over all this in more detail with her. I will have my follow-up CT September 3. I have an appointment on July 12 with a thoracic surgeon at the U of U. I still need to think over more whether I want to go through an invasive procedure which can have inconclusive results that gain me maybe a month knowing for sure..or not, though I probably will still meet with him. My complementary medicine team of acupuncturist, naturopath, and internal medicine/anthroposophical doctor have all been notified and are already working adjustments to ongoing treatments and plans. I rest easier knowing I'm in good hands with all my medical team.
In the meantime, I will continue on with my plans for the summer and engage in my daily life fully as I have been: riding, weight lifting, walking, working at WMI, playing with border collie, projects with my husband Dave and enjoying beloved friends, to name just a few delights. I have quite a bit of vacation time coming and was planning to ride our horses and go fishing in the mountains a lot, if it ever quits snowing and flooding. (Fremont County is experiencing 50 year flood levels and the governor has declared it a federal disaster area. Check out Fremont County Flood 2010 on Facebook for photos and videos.)
My love to all of you out there, and thank you for your continued support and care and love while I travel on this path. This excerpt by Ranier Maria Rilke still rings true right now:
"So you mustn't be frightened, if a sadness rises in front of you, larger than any you have ever seen; if an anxiety, like light and cloud-shadows, moves over your hands and over everything you do. You must realize that something is happening to you, that life has not forgotten you, that it holds you in its hand and will not let you fall."
all the best, Leslie

Hi Leslie,
I am really sorry
Hi Leslie,
I am really sorry you have this uncertainty to deal with. I have always really admired your positive attitude + I love the quote you put at the end of your post. I am glad you are feeling so well + you are really able to do lots of great stuff on a regular basis. I am glad these nodules are so small. Please know that I am thinking of you + hoping for the best possible results. Take good care!0 -

Hi Leslie,
Well you had some good and some not as good- a mixed bag, as you say. I've never had a biopsy on my lungs- I don't know if I'd want to go there, if I were you. Lung biopsies seem to have more risks than biopsies in some other places (my stepdad had one and it was not a pleasant experience & they didn't get a big enough sample to properly test it & had to do it all over again on another date). Something to discuss w/ the doctors and the lung guy- maybe my fears of it are unwarranted.
I'm glad to hear you are embarking on life and all that the summer has to offer! I will check out Fremont County flooding online. I have a great aunt who lives in Dubois- I haven't heard anything from her lately, so I don't know about the weather there right now- maybe I'll have to give her a call.
Well, you take care- you do have a lot going on, but choosing to continue to live life to its fullest is the best thing you can do and I think your attitude is great!
Cheers,

relatively new procedure I couldnt pronounce then nor spell and I can't recall name now (branciactomy ?or trachiactomy??) but you're given anesthesia tho not knocked out as you need to follow instructions (swallow) at some point; you are (or I was) strapped/tied down to bed and thin device goes up your nose and i'm getting sick......
Results then were good to me (then) but spot they snipped sample from hurt for awhile. If this procedure can be done, its alot less invasive than being cut open.....Depends on whats being looked for, I guess.......steve0 -
Thanks for all your replies
Very helpful to not feel alone right now. Lisa, Steve, thanks for the info and opinions on lung biopsies. I'll be learning lots about the lungs in the next while. Went to a seminar put on by CCA and the Huntsman today in SLC which was great. Paula and John G were with us and that was such a treat to have my cyber friends right there in person. We're still in SLC because a winter storm has made the pass heinous. Hopefully tomorrow will let us head home and we hope the rivers don't rise again too much with all the new snowfall.

Leslie,
You sure are balanced. I know the mixed bag was not exactly what you wanted to hear but you seem to have it in perspective. Your plans for the summer sound wonderful. I wish I had info about lung biopsies but I do not. I will be holding you in my thoughts and prayers.
I loved the saying that you quoted. Thanks for sharing.
Aloha,
