What is the longest anyone had to wait before having Lumpectomy or surgery?

Hi Cindy Ann
Mine was very quick. My lump was detected on a Wednesday (5/27/09), had an appointment with a surgeon on Thursday (5/28/09) and had my lumpectomy on Friday (5/28/09). Confirmed diagnosis on 6/3/09.
My understanding is that Stage and Grade is determined after surgery and the path report is completed. I'm curious how they know yours is Stage 0 grade 2?
I can understand them not wanting to do any surgery until your bronchitis is gone. You need good working lungs!
Good luck with your decision!

I had a stereostatic core biopsy that they were able to do with mammogram guide the needle right into the cancer site. It was clear as can be as it was surrounded by microcalcifications. It's in one small cluster. They got most of it during that procedure. They staged and graded the cancer based on that.I am at a comprehensive breast center. My surgeon is the chairman of it at a very large teaching hospital. They have 10 years of my mamamograms and compared them. This is a very small area. It had been 13 mths since my last mammogram. I have the path report it's pretty clear. But I also know that the true results are when they get inside and do lumpectomy. My concern now is limiting surgery as much as possible because I have another doc my cardiologist saying the danger in surgery lies in the recovery room and phase. Then to top it off I am sick again lungs sound very harsh. So they won't operate even if I beg. To make matters even more crazy my surgeon leaves town for 10 days on vacation the end of June through the week of the 4th of July.. I am scared to death that I am because of illness, waiting for braca wasting time . I just have to get rid of this reoccuring bronchitis.. Get healthy for surgery. That is probably at this point more important then a braca that could come back neg..

I was diagnosed with
I was diagnosed with invasive ductal carcinoma, stage 2 grade 3. I had my mammo on 5/18 that was deemed "suspicious". I had an additional diagnostic mammo on on 6/9. Biopsy was also done on 6/9. Lumpectomy was performed on 7/7. Some bc's are more agressive than others. Mine was not in this catagory and perhaps yours is not either. My surgeon told me that she liked to perform the surgery within 4 weeks of diagnosis. She may have told me this because for a couple of weeks I was back and forth between lumpectomy and mastectomy. Your timeframes sound very similar to mine. I'd like to say don't worry but I know that is easier said than done. I do know that you need your lungs in good shape to go through your surgery so that is part of your delay. Good luck and keep us posted. Take care.0 -

My diagnosis was Aug.11,2009. Surgery-Nov.30,2009/Lump. Had alot of testing done in between and 2 rounds of Chemo to shrink the tumor, which had been there for over a year at the time. (IDC) The docs do want you to have it removed asap, but As Patti stated, you need to be at your best health wise and sometimes there are other factors, like waiting for test results. When faced with the decisions I had to make, I asked my surgeon how long I could go without the surgery and I was told 6 months, but that was me & my situation.

I had stage 3 that had spread to lymphnodes with a lump that grew quickly. IDC stage 3 11 out of 21 positive nodes and 10 day wait for surgery once knew what it was. Another month before saw Cancer team and then began chemo about 3 weeks later.

I had a biopsy on 1/20/09 and didn't have my mastectomy until 4/22/09. I waited so the mastectomy and DIEP reconstruction could be done at the same time. In fact, I waited almost two months for an initial consultation with the plastic surgeon. Fortunately, he had a cancellation, so I only waited a month after the initial consultation. But, the surgery could not be coordianted with my regular breast surgeon, so someone else from the same office performed the bilateral mastectomy.
It's very unusual to wait this long, and it was only because there was little chance that the cancer was going to advance. I know that if it were an aggressive form the doctors would not have let me wait this long.
You do need to be strong before you have your surgery, but I know that the waiting is very difficult.

I saw my Primary at the end of June 2009. Had mammogram the following week, then biopsy within another week. Surgery the third week of July, and I met the oncologist for the first time the second week of August. The tests he ordered--PET Scan and Bone scan--were done very fast, and the MRI's that followed were also scheduled without delay. So, by Septemember the onc had laid out and implemented a plan of treatment. So far, so good.0 -
I had my routine mammo in
I had my routine mammo in Dec. 09, biopsy Jan 25th 10. Got results on Jan 29th Surgery(lump.) was not until March 22nd 10. I was worried about surgery date also seemed so long to me but they assured me it was fine. My surgery went great no lymph nodes involved stage 1 grade 1 Will keep you in my prayers. God Bless

i had chemo first
I found the cancer myself Aug. 5 2003 and had all the tests done and saw two surgeons and started chemo Sept. 19 2003. I had to have the tumor shrunk first. 6cm, 3cm, and a smaller one. It was grade 3 and the onc said it grew to that size in one year but the mammogram or ultrasound didn't show it. It was also in my lymph nodes. I had surgery Dec. 30 2003. More chemo and radiation after that.0 -

Best of luck to you,

Felt the lump around March 15, 2010 about a week before my daughters 9th birthday. Kept thinking it is just a fibroid your young only 38 and it don't run in your family, and my annual pap test was in 2 weeks anyway. It was hard not to keep feeling it. My NP at my gyno's office said was pry just a fybroid not to worry for the same reasons I was telling myself, I had this feeling it was something worse, so when I left my gyno's office on 4/1/10, I stopped at Baylor Breast Center that was all on the same campus as my gyno and went in and made an appointment for the next available mammogram.
4/5/10: Had mammogram and sonogram (cuz the mammo showed something not right)
4/7/10: Had sono guided needle biopsy
4/8/10: GOT THE CALL.....CANCER (Stage1, Grade III Invasive Ductial Cancer, est. size 1.4)
4/13/10:Blood tests for Brac I and II (Negative on both)
4/15/10: MRI done on both breast and nodes (Cancer only in the left breast with the lump, 2 nodes looked enlarged and wanted to do another sono biopsy on the nodes)
4/20/10: Sono guided node biopsy on axillary nodes (Dr. called 4/21/10 and said NODES are Negative)
4/22/10: Had blue dye injected around nipple for another procedure done the next day (surgery)
4/23/10: Had lumpectomy and 2 Nodes Removed ( Dr. called 4/27/10 and said nodes were negative and they got clear margins and tumor was only 1.1cm, Staged as STAGE 1,NO NODES, GRADE III, ICD)
5/14/10: Had Port Catheter surgically installed (had a rough time with that surgery and almost spent the night due to pain levels) use for chemo infusions
5/20/10: First Chemo AC every 2 weeks, then Friday's after chemo I get a shot of Neulasta (4rounds of this) then 12 rounds of Taxol every week then 5 to 7 weeks of radiation. That is my treatment plan as of today. I have 2 AC's down and 2 more togo, next one is 6/17.
It seemed to be moving so fast, it seems a blur now, but my Doctor's all said if I wanted to slow down and wait on the BracI and II test results came back, because if they were positive I was going to have a double mastectomy. But I just wanted that cancer out of me NOW. So we pushed on. I know how you feel, just having that cancer in your body is a constant reminder and worried me so much. Hang in there and listen to your doctors and get a second opinion if you are worried or just to make you feel better.
Good Luck, xoxoxox0 -

I appreciate all your stories and now feel better and trust in my doctors and myself. I started this post not only for myself but for everyone to tell their stories and help newbies see that everyone handles this differently.(They are normal..) But most still have great results.I thought it would be informative, not scary, and interesting to hear how everyone started out. It also gives everyone a place to tell their story. Some peace and calmness in at a time when it is needed most..
Blessings and Hugs,
Cindy Ann0
