Your Location,type of Brain Cancer?
Oligodendroglioma stage 2. It has returned and she is scheduled for surgury this month. I'm intrested how many people have brain tumors and where they live. Her Oncologist said there was a rash of brain tumors in Children in Upper middle of Ohio recently. We are from Ohio on the East side of the state. Good luck everyone and please let me know. Im also curious if anyone has been exposed to pesticides and radiation or lives by a freeway that sprays or grew up around one,

My wife was 26 when she was
My wife was 26 when she was diagnosed in 2006 with Anaplasic Astrocytoma/Oligodendroglioma Grade 3 which is now believed to be GBM Grade 4. We also have a nephew (my wife's side) who was diagnosed with PNET (brain tumor) a couple years ago at age 12. A friend of mine has a 31 year old daughter with a brain tumor (not sure of the type). My wife and nephew have both lived and/or worked in farming comunities their whole lives. Exposed to perticides? Definitely. We grew up and still live in Southern Ontario, Canada. I know a few years ago a brain tumor was hardly heard of, but now almost anyone I talk to knows someone, or has a friend of a friend with a brain tumor. Like you mentioned, many of them children or young adults. I know when we go to the Cancer Centre we see many young people with newly diagnosed brain cancer. Definitely can't help but think there is something strange going on.0 -
Another midwesterner
Indiana. My wife was 50 when diagnosed with GBM4..The guy who sits behind me at work in the same town had cat3...He's how we knew to go to MD Anderson.
My wife had, had a seizure 20 years ago..just one!
They were thinking Epilepsy...
They put her on the generic form of Tegretol (Carb.....)and she was never taken off of it and she would never stop on her own...just blood test, more tegretol, bloodtest more tegretol for 20 years.
I told the oncologist that I thought not stopping the tegretol years ago caused the tumor.
He looked at me and told me that she had probably had this slow growing tumor 20 years ago, but nobody caught it.
Who knows.0 -
I'm from California, I have
I'm from California, I have Germinoma. I think most everyone has been exposed to pesticides, these days, with how often they are used in the market these days, so I can't really say for sure if that has anything to do with it. Though, I was told this was simply something I was born with, a fluke, nothing that was caused or triggered by anything.0 -

My husband was diagnosed in 2009 with GBM and passed away 15 months later. Two months before my husband, a young man at our high school passed away of the exact same tumor. I later learned there was another GBM death within a mile of our home within months of my husbands. I have always felt that cell phones are contributing factors and more independent studies are suggesting this to be true. I would guess there are many environmental factors that are contributing to the increase of cancer in this country.0 -

Hi there, my daughter now 13, is doing really well. She has had her 4th clear MRI. She too is on IV chemo every other week. Is yours Avastin? She had 35 radiation treatments and was taking temodar but unfortunetly the cancer was growing back during treatment. At that time her doctors said there was nothing more they could do for her and that she was going to die. I was so mad at them that I took all my daughters medical records and left that hospital with no doctor for her or anything. She now goes to the Jimmy Fund clinic at Dana Farber cancer institue in Boston MA. They started her on a 5 drug regimen of 2 different oral chemos and iv avastin along with a cocktail of other meds. The meds all work together to stop blood flow to the cells. So far it is working. No evidence of disease for 10 months. think positive and positive will happen. please let keep me updated.0 -
Brain Tumors
I was diagnosed in 1994 at the age of 32 with multiple meningiomas, some in inoperable areas. I've had the surgeries and IMRT radiation therapy and in 2005 I was upgraded to brain cancer. I was treated at the Cleveland Clinic in Cleveland, OH where we lived.
I grew up in Indiana, about 20 miles north of Indy surrounded by corn and soybean fields. All the farmers used pesticides.
However, my doctors are fairly certain that my tumors were caused by a severe auto accident I was in at the age of 12. It was February 1974 and we were out running errands on a cold, snowy, Saturday morning. I was sitting behind my stepmother, my sister was in the front passenger seat, my baby brother was in his car seat next to me and my older brother wsa on the other side of the car seat. We were in a Ford station wagon, stopped behind a VW Beetle at a light when an 18 wheel semi couldn't stop behind us and plowed into us, shearing off the 18 1 1/2" bolts on his grill. I slammed into the headrest in front of me and had a severe concussioin with headaches for 6 months afterward. My doctors believe that is when the tumors started.
This has not been an easy journey, but God has made it manageable and that is all I ever asked for.

17 year old with brain tumor in Alaska
Hi:
My daughter was diagnosed in February 2011 with Anaplastic astrocytoma, grade 3. Brain cancer. It was in her left frontal lobe. She had surgery and radiation in Seattle. We are now doing chemo in Alaska. It has caused significant speech deficits. It is so sad. My daughter was a senior in high school when she got this diease. She has been an honor student ALL of her life. Now she has significant deficits. All of her friends have gone on to college while my daughter is fighting for her life.
I don't know what caused this illness. I worry about cell phones. I read somewhere that is could be the Epstein Bar Virus, which I find interesting because she had Mono her Junior year. I think that Epstein Bar causes Mono, but I am not certain.
I hope you are your daughter are doing well. God Bless you.

Hi,
My sister was also diagnosed with mono in 2005; there was a signal abnormality on the MRI and the neurologist at the time said it was a focal gliosis caused by Epstein barr. He was wrong it was a low grade glioma. This year it grew and the brain resection gave us the diagnosis of anaplastic astrocytoma.
I wonder how many more brain tumors are linked to mono?

Good Morning:
That would be very interesting to know. Also, perhaps it could help with a cure. The mono made Sarah so sick, it was unbelievable how sick she got. I hope you and your sister are doing well. God Bless you both! We are having Sarah's infusion today. I feel sick just at the prospect of going in and I know she does too, but we will fight. We are warriors of cancer and we will not quit.

Hello,
I was just wondering how your daughter is doing? My son is 17 and currently on Temodar for his brain tumor located in the left thalamus. (It was removed and he was also on radiation for 6.5 weeks. He is doing well, MRI looks good and he feels ok. This is his third tumor since the age of 5 as the previous radiation caused the brain tumor.
I hope all is well and would love to hear how everything is going. Thanks!0 -

26 year old in Ontario, Canada
This is a really bad comparison and I hope it by no means sounds insensitive. It seems like the new car situation. When you buy a new car you suddenly notice the same type of car. It seems like they are everywhere. I have an oligodendrom glioma grade II and my family said that they are hearing stories from friends about their brain tumors that we did not even know about. All of the stories have a happy ending and perhaps that is why they are shared now. I have not specifically heard of an increased number of brain tumors in the area of Ontario where I live. I was told that this type of tumor is not hereditary however my great grandmother died of a brain tumor and both my aunt and mother has cerebral anuerysms( anuerysms are not really related to tumors.. so who knows). I was also a twin. The twin was lost at about in the third month of pregnancy. It would have been interesting if my twin had lived to see if he/she would be having the same issue. On the other hand, did the chromosomes become defected because of the twin? Something to think about.................0
