It's funny that you would post about phantom farts this morning Clift. I have been thinking about humour on this board lately. I like it when we laugh at ourselves....the thread..you might be a cancer survivor...is a joy to me. All the stupid things we can relate to.

I worry sometimes that perhaps new people might find my post too flip or off-hand. I want to assure you that I don't mean it that way and sometimes humour on the internet is difficult to understand. I think if we were all in the same room we would "get" the joke when someone actually said it instead of just writing it. another reason to be very gentle with one another.

So just saying to newbies and people suffering through chemo, I do not take your path lightly....I feel your pain and stress and grief and fear.

Please help me! someone else...who's been here awhile...can you say what I am trying to say???

    Humor
Well, you've already said it, Sweetie:)

Humor is great as it takes the "edge" off of something that can be so serious - anytime one can laugh or poke fun at one's self, is a tremendous release.

And Maggie May, you have certainly been down these roads as a long time fighter and survivor, so you of all people, truly understand how hard hard it is to walk down the cancer path. Having gotten to know you these past few months, I know you are not making light of anyone's situation. We all empathize deeply with what one another is experiencing. Having been through it and having to watch someone else follow in your footsteps is a hard thing to do.

Why? Because we know how difficult the path to wellness can be.

The Board is many things at any given moment in time - it is an information board - it is a friendship and sharing board - it is a Life board - and most importantly, it is a Family board.

I think many of the new people who join, have been reading the board for a period of time before they join, so I think they see alot of the spectrum we experience here.

That's the big draw here - the people and the personalities - that's what makes this place hum:)

We all like a good laugh - it helps balance and allievate our anxieties and fears and is good for the soul.

P.S. I was looking through some old posts yesterday and found one of mine where I was introducing myself to you, as you were just returning.

Your reply was: "We have not been able to know one another very well because I have not been on this forum for much of the time that you have been here. I have read your posts and you are such a caring, giving individual."

We're getting to know each other now - and ain't it great?

I always understand what you are trying to say:)

    ((Maggie May))

    You expressed it well mags
Thank you for this important post mags. To let everyone know that we never mean to diminish the heartache, seriousness, or struggle of having cancer and what it does to our lives.

We simply want to acknowledge there is a dark side and a light side to every situation in life and by finding a little humor within the monumental weight of what we face, it makes it a little easier to hold ourselves upright and cope the uncertainty of what may lie ahead.

Living with cancer without some relief, lightheartedness, and gratitude for the treasures that still remain in our lives would bring us to our knees and rob us of a reason to continue the battle.

Humor can provide strength and strength is made of many components; love, humor, forgiveness, compassion and a large dose of reality.

Please know that there were no harmful intentions or insults meant by starting that thread. Only hope for spreading a little joy, letting others know we all share the same daily adjustments to something we never dreamed we would have to endure, and helping others laugh about the things we feel are unmentionable to others.

    Tumor Humor
I think you did a great job expressing yourself. Cancer isn't always funny, it's not all shits & giggles as they say. Sometimes it's just giggles. Chances are if someone had a sense of humor before they got cancer they can still have it during cancer.

I have the most wonderful friends at work....
and we make fun of my cancer all the time. We don't mean it to be flippant, but really, what's the alternative? Sit around be depressed? I refuse to be depressed. I too am very optimistic in my treatment and future. We laugh at the "whoosh-click" that my pump makes. It makes my patients look around the room and wonder what the hell that sound is and where it comes from. I laugh when I leave. I pay no attention to it, mostly because I've carried that thing for many work nights.

Humor makes the world go round. I would never make fun of, or tell anyone else how they should feel. Their feelings need validated, and even though I can make fun of myself, my chemo brain, my chemo anything, I would never make fun of anyone else. I love it here that we can talk about anything. Poop, pooping our pants, skid marks, regularity, our ports, our hair (speaking of....why is the hair on my head falling out but my few chin hairs are thicker and my leg hairs grow at twice their usual rate?) It just doesn't make sense!! I digress.

I appreciate that there is humor here. I still cry when someone passes that we've grown to love. It's so easy to love everyone here.

Mostly, what I wanted to say is that Maglets has said everything just right and succinctly. What a pro!!

Hey Mags - I agree with the others. You said it well. Humor has been an important part of my fight. The humor on this forum is what drew me in. Brant Walton showed me the power of facing cancer with humor - dark, ireverant, "screw cancer" humor. I'll never forget him for that. We've got to have some humor to lift us up.

    I agree
I agree, Mags! You put it well! We can't just always be down and dwelling on our fears, chemo side effects, etc. Continuing to poke fun and laugh at ourselves helps us to keep living. Someone at my oncology office today said "some choose to stay down in a pit, while others choose to laugh and keep living no matter what their situation!"

    Cheers!

    Laughter is good medicine
    Mags,
Well put. I have a very strong sense of humor. I love to laugh but I also would not want to offend anyone who is having a hard time and is coming here for comfort and answers. I can say that during many dark chemo nights I have come here and there has been a "thread" of humor that has made me laugh or smile, for me this is good medicine.

I must say those that post with a bit of playfulness also have great compassion. We have learned from them how to handle the stress, fear, pain, side effects and the emotional discomforts of this horrible disease, thank you for everything!

    fine job
No need to elaborate, as others have said, you covered it quite well.
I myself would never have gotten through this without laughing when I could. Although I think people without cancer have a harder time dealing with our "humor" then those who have walked in our shoes. I know I have made some of my family members jaws hit the floor with some of the things I have said over the last few years, and to tell you the truth I get a kick out of it! My poor mother LOL.
Luckily my wife shares my views on this and while even she has struggled with my quips at times early on, she is now right there with me! live, LAUGH, love, thats life man, and despite all of this, it is still a beautiful thing!!!

    Mags,

I wouldn't have made it almost 3 yrs through this without lots of humor! Laughter makes everyday worth 'it' for me. I struggle but humor gets me through. I can't tell you how many times I came on here for that, even though I wasn't well enough to respond. My family knows that laughter is the gift for me!

You said it better, but that's my take.

Ain't nothing wrong with "poop humor", afterall
politicians constantly excrete a lot worse poop from their mouths than we'll ever compete with and our stuff won't harm the nation......
