port bleeding

As I already posted, my mom had her port inserted today. Bleeding is an issue with her because of her medications. It has blead through a thick bandage in about 5 hours. The nurse said to call the doctor if she had "excessive bleeding" - well, whats excessive? I have changed the bandage, and if it continues to bleed over the next couple of hours, i will give the doctor a call. What was your experiances with bleeding after the port?

    I joined this board last week-after my mom was just diagnosed. ***sigh-- in reading all these posts, My heart goes out to everyone- My mom is also getting a port- in 11 days. I just wanted to say hopefully we can support each other through this thing we will help them fight. It's a long road for us, too, Tracey. She is just starting to get sick I believe since they say 10 days after 1st chemo that you will. :-( You ladies who have this all I can say is I love you all and I am glad you are here..and we can support each other.     Tracey,

    I've had my port in for 10 months and never had a problem with bleeding. I'd certainly listen to the advise of the nurse and call the doctor if it persists. Hopefully she can get it under control because the port certainly makes any access (putting drugs in or taking blood out) MUCH easier.

    This reply is much later than a couple of hours, but I think excessive bleeding means a lot of blood. We "civilians" tend to panic much more easily at the sight of blood than the pros do. As long as it shows any signs of slowing down at all, I would say it's probably fine.

    Update
    Ended up speaking to the dr several times last night. She said she expected the bleeding due to the Plavix my mom has to take. I had two options - but alot of pressure on it (for up to 24 hrs) or go to ER where they would put pressure on it. She said my mom must stay laying down, with compression and ice. Bleeding finally slowed at about 6:00 this morning, but it was a LONG night. Thanks for your concern ladies!

    Doing better,
    although it is still really sensitive, and she is nervous about having it accessed tomorrow. Hopefully the numbing cream works.

    The numbing cream works
    The numbing cream works GREAT. Use a big glob and put it on 45 minutes to an hour before the port is due to be accessed. Cover with a pad of Saran Wrap.

    My mom woke up with purple bruising coming from the port site, covering both breasts. She bruises easily due to her blood thinnners, but I though it was odd to show up this many days later. She has a call in to the surgeon, and she sees the onc. tomorrow. Just wondering if this happened to anyone else.

    Not for me
    I bled very little....they glued the incision instead of stitching. If it fills another bandage, call the doctor.
    I did have an allergic reaction to the tape and had to take the bandage off ahead of time. Saundra

    I had bruising for a long time, but just over the port area. In fact, mine still looks a bit "bruised" but it's just because the port itself is purple and if you don't have a lot of padding in that area, it kind of shows thru.

    Apparently that cream is a God send - no pain - yeah!!! First round went well, she is on day 4 now, some nausea and fatigue - nothing too too bad. thanks for your support!
