I am a nutritionist myself and I was surprised when I read some strange stuff regarding the effects of some kind of foods and cancer.
I read in the internet that dairy products are not good for cancer as they make the PH of the body acidic which helps the cancer cells and in alkaline environmet the cancer cells can not grow.
The truth is any food can only affect the PH of GI tract not the whole body.Acidic PH is making a good environment in your intestine for good bacteria to grow and do n't let the pathogen bacteria to grow so it can increase your immunity.
As mentioned in other replies take the required and good quality dairy products.

I too read upon the effects certain foods have towards cancer and I read in this book "Crazy Sexy Cancer.", that milk was a no-no.
For me I think it's all about moderation anyway.
I never looked at only the GI-tract being affected by acidity or alkalinity. Many reading materials makes one believe that the entire body is affected. Now I must do some more research..:-)

That is really interesting. I do love dairy foods but only eat them in moderation. I hope that is OK. Is the GI the stomach and intestines? I have Peritoneal Cancer (lining of the stomach area) so I guess I have to be more careful?
Where do you live? I noticed you have made remarks about your country being different. I live in the UK.

I am an Iranian an I live in Iran.
Dear Tina:The stomach PH is always acidic due to gastric acid and it is inevitable to digest the food.Even dairy or non dairy food can not affect it as it is the nature of it.In intestines lactose can be fermented and produce Lactic acid which can acidify the environment.Many pathogenic bacteria can not colonize in acidic environmnt.in the other hand lactose can feed good bacteria which produce vitamin B12 for you and also they cover the mucus and inhibit the adhesion of bad bacteria to your mucus.I hope you find this explanation useful as English is not my vernacular language!
You need to take 2-3 serving of dairy every day.(each serving is about a cup)
You can use skimmed fresh milk, yogurt or cheese (30g).
Try to use organic dairy products which contains probiotics.

Thank-you for replying. Your explanation is very thorough and your English is amazing It is nice to speak to you. I will try to make sure my dairy foods are organic - my husband has probiotic and I never realised how important it was. Ginger, I just love ginger and I will certainly add that to my diet.
I am trying to loose all of the extra weight I put on while I was on chemo (steroids mostly) - 2 stone altogether. I am finding it really hard. Do you have any advice for me? I do a little swimming and running but the weight doesn't seem to be going.

Actually your first priority should be a healthy diet rather than weight loss.Give your self some time and you will lose it gradually.
Aim at 1 pound a week.Have a good break fast and put your lightest meal at night maximum by 7.If you are sleeping late and felt hungry after 7 try a glass of milk or a serving of fruits.
Most of the time food is not the reason of gaining weight! It is our behaviour toward food which makes us fat.Try the discover the behaviours that you feel they are not the balanced one and work on them.

Thank-you for replying so quickly. I know exactly what you are saying about food and behaviour and it is true some of the time but my biggest problem is wine at the moment. During chemo I never lost my appetite and apart from the first few days after the I had the chemo I enjoyed eating and drinking wine. In fact that was the few things that gave me joy. So I know I am still drink too much wine and am trying to cut it down.
So I am thinking about why I drink so much as all it ever does is enhance my mood and that is sadness at the moment. So quite often when I drink it just makes me cry. I think this is something I have got to address. I only drink when I go out with my friends.
It just seems like everything is a battle still!!!! I am unhappy not being able to fit into my clothes and have had to buy larger ones. But I enjoy eating and drinking. It feels like I will have to sacrific something I like to loose weight. When will the battles ever end????

Thank-you for your kind words. I was a caregiver to my mom and I know how hard it is. Sometimes I think it is harder because you feel helpless. It is OK to be sad, you are right. I have spent so long trying to pretend everything is alright that it is a bit overwhelming. But I have some very good friends and children to help me along my journey.

I just read all the post about dairy and I found them very interesting, I love the fact that we all can talk about our experience and learn all the time, because we all take care of ourselves different, and we help each other ... in my experience was the same, I got 2 rounds of chemo, pretty much one a year, 2009, 2010, and I'm fighting to not get one this year, my CA-125 is high, but my CT scan doesn't show anything, and my doctor wants me to take Letrozole 2.5mg for a little while, I hope it works ...
What I started to do a couple months ago is to juice vegetables and fruit for lunch, a mixed of carrot, celery, beets, broccoli, couliflower, oranges, apples, etc, I started wishing to help me to get my numbers down, but my after 2 weeks with this routine, I realize I was loosing weight, and now pretty much I loose like 5 pounds without really sacrifice much, i took out bread, at least I don't eat it daily, and I'm eating portions of food, I cook, I do not eat much dessert, just some ice cream once in a while, and I'm feeling lighter, I think you might do something like I do, it is not just I'm loosing weight it is also, my digestion is better, and I believe I'm helping my immune system, I got the idea of those vegetables and fruit by a web site www.winthefihtagainstcancernaturally.org they use organic, but for now I can't affort to buy everything organic, in that web site are much more to learn ... there is a lot of information, we can use many ways to get better, and certanly to talk to each other is the most important, we all suffer kinda the same, and we all can fight in our ways, but doing it together is a bless.

dairy and ovc
I have many food sensitivites, dairy is one of them. Due to the fact that i have
diverticulosis, i have a very strict regimen. Have eaten mostly chemical free food
for over 25 years, always include veggies with the evening meal, but i still got
cancer.
My sister died from ovc, my father had lung cancer, so i think its safe to assume,
i have cancer wired into my dna. I told everyone i know to not worry so much about
eating cheeseburgers, pizza, all the good stuff, cuz I ate very well, and still got
cancer... i was not being real serious about that, and they understood. i do eat
pizza and hamburgers, but not that often
It seems like all those "studies" or advice about what foods
to avoid are kind of bollocky... cancer is a complex
disease, and i do not believe it comes down to "eating right"
moderation is usually a good road to take, and eating food that is freshly cooked

It is my understanding that many variables affect the probability of cancer in an individual. Many of these variables are within our control, or we are able to accomodate for them. You can be squeaky clean in one aspect, but if the others are ignored, it isn't much help. I watch the following five things with regard to avoiding another bout with cancer:
Blood sugar
Hormones
Stress
Inflammation
Blood Supply
Diet plays into many of these, but diet is not the complete answer and won't keep you cancer free.
Genetics certainly plays a role. I am convinced there are some genetically indestructible individuals out there who can ignore all of the items on the above list and never get cancer. Once you've had it, however, there's no question you need to monitor your lifestyle and environment to give yourself a fighting chance.0 -

Yep, I am on the same page as you, Tethys, for the rest of my life. I put stress reduction on the top of the list (stress will raise the blood sugar)...mental attitude is a big challenge. It's a full-time job monitoring my thoughts and staying calm. Breathe in, breathe out...

Dairy
I stumbled upon upon this thread and find it very interesting. My sister sent me a book about cancer fighting food and I was surprised to find out that the author thought dairy was a no-no for OCA. My oncologist encourages me to eat yogurt frequently and this author thought yogurt was one of the worst dairy choices. But calcium is important and since I'm on coumadin, I have to limit my dark leafy veggies and you can only eat so many almonds. I have switch to antibiotic/hormone free milk. But have not done so yet for cheese.
