You're welcome! Another tip. Freeze the fruit first, then use it. It makes it like a milkshake. That is if you can handle cold things on your throat. I couldn't, for a couple of months after radiation.0 -

lol!! Now that's funny Hondo! I BET your wife makes good smoothies!! I would suggest the PEG too. I got mine way too late into the treatments. And I lost a needless amount of weight. Which makes you weaker to fight:)

I know. What I hear (read) is that most, who start without it, end up getting it. ENT says see if he can go without it. Kinda hoping radiologist and medical oncologist say get it up front. I am a proactive approach person, but it's not my body.0 -

I should have and should still get one. It's been 2 months since treatment ended and the malnutrition is really taking it's toll. It is just too hard without. At this point it seems ridiculous to put one in, but do a google search on head and neck malnutrition related deaths versus cancer related and it is frightening...and I can tell I am not doing well...It seems easier when the PEG is part of the protocol and you don't have to make the choice. I hope that his treatment continues to go well and will keep you in my prayers!!

Hang in there. I am so sorry this is so hard for you after treatment is done. One thing that I have already learned through Mark's surgery is that progress is not straight forward. You would think one day would build on the other towards healing and strength and it is just not that way. Mark had a strong day yesterday, and a strong start today and now he feels like he has been hit by a bus. He will probably be down for most of the day tomorrow. I know now why you all say measure progess in months, not days or even weeks. I will let the others who are further along in recovery advise you on how to get through this time. Just know that my thoughts and my good energy is heading your way covering you from head to open toed shoe. Thank you for taking the time and your energy to help me.
The good news is after Mark spoke with the medical oncologist he agreed to get the PEG. His only worry is they will give him general anesthesia again to put it in. He had 3 surgeries and he believes all of the anthesthesia is part of his slow recovery. He may be right. So hopefully they can sedate him and give him something local. I will feel much better with him getting the PEG.
Stacey, stay on these boards and push through. Keep us updated. I see your thread about how hard eating is and hope you are getting some good feedback. My best to you.

Anyone that has been here while I have been here has heard me drone on about getting a PEG. I was not going to and as I have posted before, when I got home and started research, I quickly changed my mind when I saw how many HNC patients die of malnutrition. Being only 125lbs, my RO was happy I came over to his side of thinking.
Here are some higher calorie smoothies. I had to play with the ingredients. We all know what it is like to deal with fried taste buds. Some of us like things that are terrible to others. And for some of us stuff still taste like walpaper paste. I use my emulsifier to get stuff as smooth as I can since my tongue still hurts:

1 large avocado
1/2 cup cream
2 cups milk
1/2 teaspoon vanilla essence (optional)
1 teaspoon honey
2 tablespoons caster sugar
Directions
1 Scoop out the avocado and put in a blender.
2 Add the cream and blend until smooth.
3 Gradually add milk, vanilla, honey and sugar.
4 Serve in chilled glasses.

AVOCADO BANANA BERRY SMOOTHIE
You can throw just about anything in a smoothie to enhance its flavor such as honey, tofu, jams, any combination of fruits, peanut butter, juices, etc., but keep in mind it will effect the nutritional values.
Half a ripe avocado
1 to 1 1/2 frozen bananas
4 to 5 frozen or fresh strawberries
Splash non-fat soy or other nut milk
Pinch cardamom
Pinch allspice
Whatever else strikes your fancy. . . Nuts, fruits, spices, etc throw all ingredients
into a blender and blend until desired texture is reached.
I prefer it smooth, but some like a chewable drink. Very, very delicious! Serves: 1.
AVOCADO AVALANCHE SMOOTHIE
1 large avocado
2 teaspoons condensed milk
1 cup ice
Scoop out avocado into blender.
Add 2 teaspoons condensed milk or a little more, depending on how sweet you like it. Then add the ice and blend all of it together until it's a semi-creamy texture.
PEAR AVOCADO SMOOTHIE
1 large pear, chopped
1/2 cups green grapes
1/4 avocado
2 teaspoons honey
1 teaspoon lemon juice
Blend and top with chopped pecans.

Avocado is rich in magnesium that reduces risk of excess belly fat, high blood pressure, high cholesterol and high blood sugar- the symptoms of metabolic syndrome.

I also have a juicer and I have been trying hard to get back into that, but unfortunately juices are still burning my tongue.
I find that if I am on the run I really like Bolthouse Farms products. I get the Strawberry Banana, Blue Goodness, Berry Boost, Vanilla Chai, Mocha Cappuccino, and Hazelnut. They also have a Green Goddess and a C-Boost. But both have mangos and I am highly allergic. The Mocha has 19grams of protein.0 -

Hi Cindy,
My husband has base of tongue cancer and had to have his teeth out prior to starting his treatments. It has been a real challenge getting him nourishment. I have come up with a shake that he loves and it is packed with calories. I blend a couple tablespoons of peanut butter and a couple tablespoons of honey, with ice cream and enough milk to get it to blend into shake consistency. I threw in a banana once, and he liked that too. My next venture is to throw some chocolate chips into it. I know that fruit and yogurt might be the preferred alternative for a healthier shake, but he is needing to pack on the calories right now and the combination of no teeth and Chemo/Rad makes it more important to mix him whatever I can get down his throat.
I have also blended him cheeseburgers and beans, chicken pot pies and sausage and eggs, so I have decided that just about everything can be reduced to enough of a liquid to get down with a spoon or a straw. As a caretaker, it is giving me a little bit of fun and enjoyment coming up with these different concoctions. :-)0
