I didn't mention this in my other "fainting post", but we've also had a recent scare with our 10 year old daughter. About a week ago, Allison asked me "What do you think this weird bump on my leg is?" It's on the lower back side of her knee on the left leg. It feels about walnut sized and is very hard. Of course, my husband and I were wondering if it could be the worst, but not wanting to jump to conclusions. We went to her pediatrician Tuesday, who then took x-rays. It appears benign due to its shape and the fact that she's had no pain or swelling there. Most osteosarcomas are discovered due to pain and swelling in the area. Most do start in this exact location as my daughter's. So, the fact that it's not bothering her at all and we discovered it by accident is good. The question will be is will it still need to be surgically removed or not and if so, when. That would all depend upon how big it is, the likelihood of it fracturing her bone (the fibula) or interfering with future growth and/or formation. We have an appt. Tuesday afternoon with an orthpaedic surgeon. I want to know if they can rule cancer out for sure just by examining it, or do they need to do a biopsy. My daughter has no idea how serious this could be & we are trying to keep it light so she doesn't worry- her biggest worry right now is that she's supposed to get blood drawn this next week & she says she can't have a needle go into her. Even if it is not cancer- as it doesn't appear to be and I pray that is the case- it could involve a fairly serious surgery. I read online sometimes they watch and wait on surgery until all growing is done- because it could grow back if it's done before growing is over, since it's considered a "bony overgrowth". Again, doing surgery now or not will depend upon how threatening it is and how entangled with her fibula it is. I will keep you posted on what the osteo specialist has to say after we have that appointment.

Prayers always appreciated-
Lisa

    my heart goes out
Oh, Lisa. My heart goes out to you. So scary. Sometimes we know too much! Of course I am sending prayers! Praying that it is benign and non-serious as possible, and that whatever treatment/intervention she needs to have -- now or in the future -- is as easy for her as possible. How I wish you (all) weren't having to go through this! Sending love and best wishes 24-7....

Sorry that you have to be going through that worry now, I know for myself how I feel when is something about my children or grandchildren, but reading what you mention about the symtoms of swelling and pain that the Dr. told you and that your daughter doesn't have,I am pretty confident that is nothing real serious,my 8 years old grandson has a little bump in one arm and MRI was taken to discard anything bad, and everything was fine Dr. told my daughter that if it didin't grow to leave like that,so please try your best to stay positive, and of course I will be praying for your daughter.

    good news!
Allison saw the orthopedic specialist today about the bump on her leg... good news!
He says she has an osteochondroma, which is a benign overgrowth of bone right at growth plate at the end of the fibula bone (which is the smaller leg bone in the calf, on the outside of the knee down to the ankle). He said hers is small enough that we don't need to do anything right now & he wants to check her again in six months. I asked how could he be sure it's benign & didn't we need to do an MRI or take a biopsy to be sure. He said, no, he's positive of what it is, due to its shape and appearance.
He added that it may start to bother her at some point, then they would need to remove it. I had feared the surgery for it would be a big deal, but he said since it's not part of the fibula bone, just an outgrowth, they'd just open the skin and saw the bony growth off. Thank you to all who commented and prayed. Such a relief!!!!!
