Dog Lovers
Each of our breeds are special to its owners.
I could say Goldens are the best - and I've got proof of it. Because Harley's papa, Jerry Lee, just competed in the Forth Worth Kennel Club dog show - and he won:
BEST OF BREED, BEST of SPORTING GROUP - and BEST OF BREED!!!
Which means he walked away as the BEST dog in the entire show. That's his THIRD title in his career. He smoked the competition. It's hard to fool the judges.
It was a proud moment and we were able to be able to attend and sit on the front row and watch each round and the victory.
But whichever dog we own, they are the best things for us.0 -
shih tzus
Shih tzus are the most compassionate, sweet, and mellow dogs ever! They also don't shed at all, which is a huge plus. If you keep their hair long, grooming is a pain. I keep my dog's hair cut short- they call it the "puppy cut".
BTW- We have 6 shih tzu puppies who are now 2-1/2 weeks old- eyes just opened in the past few days. Fun!!
Anyone in the so. cal. area interested in a shih tzu puppy- let me know!
We also have 3 persian cats & they definitely make up for the fact that our shih tzu doesn't shed! But I love their funny flat faces. They don't have any breathing problems, either, as some apparently do. Animals are work, but they make life enjoyable too! (except for the pile of dog doo I was awakened by this morning in the hallway outside our room-lol! I fed her too late last night!)0 -
German Shepherds
They are my favorite, I also love German Shorthairs, guess I just like German dogs and German cars0 -
My vote
I have had many different types of doggie companions in my life but Shih Tzus have to be the best.
Not only are they intelligent, they are funny, playful and loving. They are labeled "companion" dogs and now I know why.
Our youngest dog knew there was a serious problem with my husband's health before we did. He suddenly started following him around like a shadow and would jump in his lap when ever he sat down. The dog acted totally out of his normal daily routine and quit wanting to play tug-of-war, quit wanting to spend lots of time outside and would not leave my husband's side. Our dog is now back to his normal routine (after one year) but still wants to "supervise" my husband especially on those bad days right after chemo.
Anyone else see a major difference in their pet's behavior?0 -
MUTTS!
I love my mutts! All four of our dogs are mixed breeds, all rescues. I have grown up with mutts and they have been so healthy and wonderful. My 3 cats were all foundlings as well. I guess the only critters we have that were purchased and pure bred are the chickens! kinda funny!0 -

AnnaLeigh,
I definitely agree with you about shih tzus! I can't compare any change in her behavior though since I got sick, since I got her as a puppy 6 months after my diagnosis. She's a family dog and loves everyone, but she follows me like a shadow and thinks I'm her mother, I think! She's now a mommy to 6 darling puppies. The last thing we need is another dog, since we also have 3 cats, but I bet we'll end up keeping one of the pups. Which one, is the hard question! Interesting how your shihtzu can tell when your hubby is sick. When my dog was a puppy, I was going through Folfox and I slept a lot in those days. She'd take a nap along with me, right next to me & if I slept for 2 hours in the afternoon, she'd faithfully stay by my side. They're great dogs!0 -

Hey Lisa, I'm not from around there, but what color are your "babies?" Our Jasmine was a sweet little black shih-tzu with a white little beard and white paws. That dog was soooo precious. She would bump you in the lips with her little black lips to give you a puppy kiss. Didn't lick you...just bumped you. She was such a joy. They are very loyal and loving little dogs. I love the breed and would do it again.0 -
Pets
For me our rescue dog "LAYCA" is the best, lab mix, she is so greatful that she doesn't know what to do for us to let us know how much she apreciates that my son took her from one of the busiest street here in Miami.
For me, before my favorite breed was german sheppard, I had one that got lost and she was incredible.0 -

Pugs and Cocker Spaniels!
I agree...puggies are amazing dogs. We have one who NEVER leaves my side when I am home. Love that dog!
Also have 3 cockers who are special in their own ways. One is always there when someone is sick, sad or lonely....one is always ready to play...and the baby...well--she's entertaining.0 -
Naughty but nice
Our dog is a beagle that we got from the Humane Society. She apparently was rescued from a puppy mill in Indiana. We don't know her exact age because of that + the vet thinks she is a little older that the HS told us. She is very smart, but I keep saying she needs to use her cleverness for good instead of evil! She thinks everyone who comes to the house is coming specifically to see her + wants lots of attention. She will do virtually anything for food; she is totally driven by her stomach. When we walk her, she usually ignores the other dogs - I think she thinks she is better than the other dogs - in fact sometimes I think she classes herself as human! She is, warts + all, an important part of our family.0 -
Our Dogs
We have a Yellow Lab and a Bichon Frise. Both WERE to be my dogs, but both have taken to my husband. Our lab is 11 yrs. old and our Bichon is 3 yrs. old. Even before my husband was diagnosed with cancer, our Bichon who's name is Baby starting paying alot of attention to him. Always licking him and sitting with him, I thought at the time it was a little strange because before that she didn't want to sit with anyone. Bichon's are clowns and maybe she was licking him because it made him laugh and the more you laugh with a Bichon the more they do it. Anyway, Baby has been a great source of comfort for my husband during his illness. For the first time the other day my husband got sick while on chemo - he's been getting chemo for 2 years now. Baby sat by his side in the bathroom and on the recliner all day until I got home. When I got home she ran up to see me and barked at me and kept running downstairs to my husband, she wanted to make sure that I knew he wasn't feeling well. As soon as I acknowledged that he was feeling bad it was then that she asked to go outside. First time all day my husband tells me. She is a wonderful dog. Our lab is a wonderful dog also, but she has her own medical issues and is getting a little to old to follow my husband anymore, but she is still our number 1 baby and always will be. I don't think my husband or myself would have been able to handle his sickness if we didn't have the dogs around to keep our minds off of the things that were happening. Dogs or any pet for that matter are wonderful to have around when your sick. Every person who is sick with anything should have a pet!0 -

Dog's Purpose (from a 6-year-old).
Being a veterinarian, I had been called to examine a ten-year-old Irish Wolfhound named Belker. The dog's owners, Ron, his wife Lisa, and their little boy Shane, were all very attached to Belker, and they were hoping for a miracle.
I examined Belker and found he was dying of cancer. I told the family we couldn't do anything for Belker, and offered to perform the euthanasia procedure for the old dog in their home.
As we made arrangements, Ron and Lisa told me they thought it would be good for six-year-old Shane to observe the procedure. They felt as though Shane might learn something from the experience.
The next day, I felt the familiar catch in my throat as Belker's family surrounded him. Shane seemed so calm, petting the old dog for the last time, that I wondered if he understood what was going on. Within a few minutes, Belker slipped peacefully away.
The little boy seemed to accept Belker's transition without any difficulty or confusion. We sat together for a while after Belker's Death, wondering aloud about the sad fact that animal lives are shorter than human lives. Shane, who had been listening quietly, piped up, 'I know why.'
Startled, we all turned to him. What came out of his mouth next stunned me.. I'd never heard a more comforting explanation.
He said, 'People are born so that they can learn how to live a good Life -- like loving everybody all the time and being nice, right?' The Six-year-old continued, 'Well, dogs already know how to do that, so they don't have to stay as long.'
Live simply.
Love generously.
Care deeply.
Speak kindly.
Remember, if a dog was the teacher you would learn things like:
When loved ones come home, always run to greet them.
Never pass up the opportunity to go for a joyride.
Allow the experience of fresh air and the wind in your face to be pure Ecstasy.
Take naps.
Stretch before rising.
Run, romp, and play daily.
Thrive on attention and let people touch you.
Avoid biting when a simple growl will do.
On warm days, stop to lie on your back on the grass.
On hot days, drink lots of water and lie under a shady tree.
When you're happy, dance around and wag your entire body.
Delight in the simple joy of a long walk.
Be loyal.
Never pretend to be something you're not.
If what you want lies buried, dig until you find it.
When someone is having a bad day, be silent, sit close by, and nuzzle them gently.
ENJOY EVERY MOMENT OF EVERY DAY!0 -

I would be a proud papa too. Now you need to post some pic's so we can check him out in the show ring too.

Hi Nana2,
We've got 4 that are mostly brown and white with a little black (the typical tri-color shih tzu). The other two are solids- one is a light cinnamon color and the other is a chocolate with a black face. They always tend to lighten up as they get older. My mama dog was the tricolor with lots of white as a little pup & now she's kind of an oatmeal color. After her first grooming, her darker colors were shaven off & the underneath hair grew in almost all light. Funny.0 -

What a great way to start the day.
And on that note... I'll have a good stretch, get up and go for a joyride across town for a massage, and then meet my beautiful daughter for lunch and a walk on the beach, after which I'll come home, have a nap, make a special supper for my sweetie, run to the door to greet her when she's home from work and enjoy a fun movie in the evening!
Another tough day on the cancer ward!

I also have a beagle who is very food-driven. I made an ID tag for her at Petsmart, and on one side of the tag printed "When you look into the eyes of a beagle, all you see is hunger." It's true. They seem to look for food constantly.0 -
