Surgery Hernia

Just wondering if anyone has gotten a a hernia after surgery? I had surgery in July 2009 and finished my chemo in December 2009. Today I went to the DR. for a bump right on the side of my scar. He told me that it is very common after surgery to get this type of hernia and that it would have to be removed if it gets any bigger. Told me to wear the tight wrap that I had to wear after surgery. Just wondering if anyone else had this problem and what they did. Thanks

    Hi,

    Yes I am actually experiencing a hernia.

    Right now I am just dealing with it because my cat-scans shows it is only a fatty tissue type of hernia and is not a threat. My surgery was performed in February 2007 and my hernia developed immediately upon healing.

    I am of the mind having gone through the surgery, healing, chemo (which I am still undergoing), shift in my weight; that I will wait until I see where things level-off? If that makes sense?

    My oncologist/surgeon says as long as I am not in any pain, to focus more on losing a little weight, which help alleviate some of it. But this is hard to do due to the steriods that I receive in my meds once-a-week.

    I'm also just a bit reluctant to have another surgery because I'm afraid of developing scar-tissue from the surgery which I know sometimes can create a bevy of problems from intestinal and organ blockages? I was so fortunate to not have any of these complications from the initial surgery so for me I'm still pondering this too because it is a bit of a nuisance and eyesore if I dare complain.

    So are you intending to have the surgery for your hernia or have you already had it?

    For me I know I will have to make this decision too.

    No surgery yet--I have a
    No surgery yet--I have a scan in June and the Dr. said we will see how big it is. I do have some discomfort if I am moving around alot during the day but the thought of another surgery is just not something I can handle right now. So I think I will let it go for alittle while and see what happens. I too am trying to watch what I eat--would love to lose some weight but having a very hard time with that right now too.

    Hernia is common
    Dear Kathy,

    I have had two hernias, one upper abdominal hernia that happened a year or so after surgery. I think they should warn women that we are more prone to hernias as we start chemo and the wound heals very slow. Anyway I went for a long time wearing a wrap until it got so big my intestines were popping out. I have to say the bundle the hernia repair left surprised me and then I do have pain where it is, they say it is the adhesions one gets. Then to my surprised I was told by colorectal surgeon I had a small hernia very low, didn't even know this. Anyway that should have been fixed with this last surgery.

    Being aware of how we are prone to hernias I will wait a longer period of time before I lift more than 6lbs. I hope others reading this share with other women the risk we are at for hernias.
