dad update!

So we are finally settled in for good in Houston Tx. We have been back and forth for tests, but now we are here for 5 and a half weeks for treatment. He will have a chemo pump 24hrs mon-fri, in combination to radiation 5 days a week. He will also have a different type of chemo for an hour on monday. He was not a candidate for surgery, but it is stage three in one lymph node, and the doctors seem hopeful. He is doing good, still able to eat and such, we are just concerned about treatment. However, we are blessed to be able to get treatment at MD Anderson, so I know he has a chance. I'm sure I will be back a lot for lots of support, as I am the main caregiver (my mom is here, but she is a worried mess). Thanks for everything. God bless!

    So glad to see your post. I have been wondering about you all. Great that you are all finally settled in Houston. MD Andrson is one of the best, well known, facilities in Texas. You should feel very confident being there. All sounds like you are on the right path. My dad also was not a surgery candidate. He recieved 6 weeks of oral chemo xeloda and radiation. He did very well. Only side effect was being wiped out and tired at the end of the week. The trouble started when he got mets to his liver in December. It all went down hill, he passed on 3/9/10. We fought it as hard as we could. Some beat it, some don't. Stay positive, I did up until the end. You are in the right place. Keep in touch. A huge hug to your mom, tell her we are thinking of her. Hugs to you and dad too!

    Hi Peachycream! It's great that your Dad is starting treatment. Everyone reacts to chemo differently. When my husband, Jim, started chemo, we were really worried about the side effects. He is on cisplatin and irinotecan (cpt11),and so far has no side effects except for tiredness a few days after. Hopefully your Dad will react well. Prayers and hugs all around.

    Hi there,
    I'm new to the forum but just wanted to let you know i'm thinking of you and your family. I to am caring for my Dad as he undergoes treatment for his cancer. It can be hard but it sounds like you have a plan of action which is always great. Keep strong :-)

    Nice to hear that today things seem so much more hopeful for you. Take care of yourself and your mom. I am in New Orleans now helping for a week while my dad is in the last few weeks of his chemo and radiation. He too is a stage three but worried at 78 that he wouldn't survive the surgery with any quality of life and that an extended or difficult recovery would put my mother in the hospital. It is hard to sit by and not be able to do anything other than fetch things and provide some support.

    Good luck your mom is lucky you can be there for the 5 1/2 weeks. Unfortunately I have to go home at the end of this week and then figure out a time to come back soon.
