Pain or discomfort in the upper right quadrant of abdomen

For the past year, I've been having a vague type of pain or discomfort under the lower rib on the right side. I had a resection one year ago and in the following CT scans, including two last month, everything looks fine, but I have to wonder if the cancer has gone to the liver. I’ve mentioned this to my oncologist, and he feels this might be related to the surgery, which was removal of the ascending colon which is on the right side. Anyway, I’m IIA and I’m having my colonoscopy tomorrow (Monday) at 7:30 AM, which will be the one year follow up after surgery. Doing it without sedation, because I don’t want to spend the day groggy. I’m hoping everything will be OK this time around.

    with the colonoscopy. I admire you for the "no sedation". Remember, they can give you a very small dose of pain meds ( demerol 50 mg is what I had)and you still remain alert. The nurse told me that there are really only about 2 places where it causes some pain and I'll tell you one is when they get to the splenic flexure...almost like taking a U-turn :)

    I hope all will look good.

    I too had my ascending colon removed...stageII. I haven't experience the pain that you described.

    Hi,
    My mom is IIB with re-section a year ago this past Nov followed by chemo regimen. In the last 3 months she has also had this same type of pain. All of her follow up scans, colonoscopy, and CEAs are ok. She has decided not to go to the dr. for this pain. In talking with her about it I could see the fear of the unknown in her face--I told her I would go with her, but she just said she is just tired and run down.
    It has been very hard for me to know that she is in pain and not going to find out what is going on. My dad is quite upset about it and it makes for a stressful time between the two of them.
    How long has your pain been going on? My mom described hers as sharp at times, not always constant but daily.
    She relates it to phantom gallbladder pain. I just don't know.

    Goodluck with your scope--Mom thought it very interesting to have hers without drugs and it gave her reassurance that they could explain all during the procedure.

    Adhesions are a pain.


    Literally.... a real big pain. It's difficult to have abdominal surgery
    without ending up with some adhesions, and sometimes, some hernias..

    My stabbing, pulling, and gas-like pains come and go.... It was
    difficult to stop worrying about them, since even a hangnail
    "could be cuticle cancer" to most of us...

    Just make sure it is the gall bladder or the pancreas. I had a resection too and get after-surgery pains and scaring pain. Good luck tomorrow, may it all come out clean.....

    Had colonscopy today and it hurt like hell without sedation.
    Had the colonoscopy this morning and everything looked good, except for a small polyp that was removed and I will have the pathology report in a few days. From my past experience of a year ago I thought doing this without sedation would be easy, but this time it hurt like hell. The pain was off the charts and I nearly told them to stop and put me under. The next colonoscopy I have, which will be in a year, becasue of the polyp they fround, will be under sedation.

    Ewww! Ouch! Did they not give you any pain meds? Was it the same doctor that you had last year or was it Dr.RotoRooter?

    So sorry you had a bad experience.Hope the pathology comes back clear & benign.

    It was the same doctor as last year and I declined pain meds and sedation, because I wanted to go flying this afternoon. Next time I have this done I'll keep my feet on the ground. :)
