but ya im gonna try to swtich i cant get in to the ob until next week so hopfuly he will do somthing
The longer you stay on pain meds like Percoset, the more problems you will have with constipation, as the meds continue to depress your bowel system. That may be a big part of why your oncologist thinks you need to get off them and use over-the-counter pain relief. I cannot over-emphasize how important it is that you not get constipated during your treatments. I lost one of my 'chemo-lounge' buddies to this. When your platelets are low, straining can cause internal bleeding; and when your white counts get beaten down it is so very dangerous to have any tears inside the bowel that can get seriously infected. That's not a pretty way to go, and your oncologist may have constipation at the forefront of his decision. (((hugs)))
And with the scar tissue and adhesions from the big surgery we all have, we all need to be pro-active about our bowels. The good thing is that, if you can stay away from pain meds and eat a high fiber diet and drink 64 ounces of fluid a day, and then take stool softeners if you ever go a day without a BM, you can usually stay on top of this and never have issues with it.0 -
Pain Meds
Linda, you a right on about the advice with getting off pain meds....I think I took a big dose of Tylenol to transition from Oxycodone. Actually, I think I was off narcotics within about 10 days. (I had an open procedure not laproscopic). I hated the bowel issues with the narcotics. I suffered greatly until I found the right dose of stool softners (and timing in relation to chemo), walking and drinking water. Now I drink lots of water...no pop, coffee or alcohol...ok well maybe a glass of wine once in a great while. I walk 2 miles everyday and love it!0 -
