Guys I got my port out today. Hot Damn. This is the biggest positive milestone in this journey. I jest at the for sale. I will now keep it on my desk to remind my body’s warriors to keep the fight up so I will not ever need another damn one installed. Plus it will be a fun show and tell with the grandkids.

They did not want to give it to me as they said it was hazardous material. I said “it came out of me and I am not hazardous – I paid for it and I want it”. What amazed me is you can’t tell where the needles went into it and it is 5/8 inch thick.

    Congrats!
    Big day for you, Kerry!

Always a milestone when you get it removed. I've had 2 of them put in - 2 of them removed.

Now, you got a great paper-weight.

I got mine out last Thursday
I got mine out last Thursday go in tomorrow to get the stitches out. I was happy to see mine go also. Mine went bad on me the tubing backed out and looped back on itself my surgeon said it may have been caused by my shoulder movement when I paddle. Did not ask for mine back thought about it but would not go good in my current office decor.
    Congratulation on this milestone.

    A big milestone
Kerry, I would have asked for mine but I was knocked out with Versed. I wish I had stayed awake because from the looks of my port site they took a hunk of meat out with the port.
Mine was taken out Feb.26th and it is still not healed on one side of incision.Little tiny pieces of stitching keep working their way out.

Celebrate! It is a big occasion.

    I wonder
why some doctors go with local and some doctors bring out the amnesia drugs? Looks like less would be best if it does the job. I'm getting a colonoscopy Thursday and am getting up the nerve to ask for no Versed...just pain meds.

How much are you charging for that ole' used port? Try e-bay and see how high the bids will go:)

    Port removal
Congrats on the port removal! Isn't that a wonderful feeling!

The dr doing my port removal wanted an IV for me even tho I only wanted local. I'd had it placed with just local, and also had a belly port removed with just local.

As it was, I had it with just local, because the chemo made my veins hurt so much that I couldn't tolerate the IV, which was placed about an hour before my procedure. I finally got the nurse to pull it, and the dr agreed to do the removal under local. I was fine with the local.

Boy not me! I literally screamed when I got the numbing shots, and the whole procedure was rough, and he even had to cauterize during. I guess since mine had been in so long there was a lot of tough scar tissue. I would have rather been totally out for it, but it's all over now anyway. After it was out and I complained how bad it was for me the doctor did say it is rougher the longer it has been in. And yes, it seemed like forever I was picking pieces of stitches that worked their way out after. It is a good feeling to have the port gone isn't it.

    Depends on who you ask
I read that some people had their port taken out and it was a breeze. Not so with me. Having it put in I might have taken 2 pain pills in all; having it taken out I was popping pain meds for several days.PLUS, the darn inner stitches haven't dissolved yet and it is painful and oozes. ( yes, I showed it to my onc nurse). My surgeon took my port out at the hospital out patient surgery. More $$$$$ I suppose?

I had a picc in my neck in the hospital and it didn't really hurt having it taken out...just a small to medium sized sting. Of course it was only in for 10 days so that might make a difference...maybe.

Good luck Steve. You'll do just fine because you are tough.

    Can I ask a question?
What's the protocol for length of time one keeps one's port???? I finished chemo (infusion kind) a year ago February...my doc is superstitious and said he likes to keep them in 2 years after chemo. I'm getting tired of port flushes (had one yesterday) but figured I'll treat myself to a port removal for Christmas if I don't need it in the mean time. Does everyone keep them in this long? You guys have me scared about how hard it will be to remove if it's been in for a long time. Laurie

My good old country primary doc
My good old country primary doc told me the norm is 18 months NED. My colon surgeon told me after my colonoscopy last month that I could take it out anytime. I don’t have an Onc as I fired the two I had. The surgeon that took it out checked with the one idiot Onc anyway. They are in the same office. He said it was fine with him. Like I really cared what he thought. I am 15 months NED. For me it was a personal mind game thing. If I had a port I had cancer. I don’t have a damned port!!!!!!!

Damn, I am going to miss my port flush nurse.

Had mine for a little over 3 years. It was handy when I had to have infusions for scans, but would no longer give blood. My doc wanted to keep in for insurance also. Glad it is out now.

    Mine was removed in
Mine was removed in February, 6 months after treatment ended. Got the all clear from the Onc and went for it. My surgeon did it in the OR, I was sore for a few weeks but not unmanageble.

It was not easy to remove. Yank. Tug. Cut. Yank. Yank. Yank! Where my port was has caved in a bit. I can feel the hole where it lived that 7 months.

Kerry! Way to go! Another reminder GONE!

Mine is still in after almost 2 years...
My onc wants to leave it in for the 5 year checkups in case something comes up......Nope , not gonna happen. It comes out the next time I get an all clear will be the 2 year mark. and it will come out as soon as I am declared NED the next visit......Tired of the reminder it gives me.......Buzz
