I need information on longterm disability and life insurance. I have these though my current job, and used my disability during my time off with treatment and recovery. But, what if I want to change jobs, or go parttime. Am I trapped to a job thats to taxing, or no longer working in my life. (I had the job before cancer)I pay the all the premium myself, my company does not contribute to this insurance, but it is through my employer. Any thoughts or ideas? I dont like the idea of being trapped in a job because I have cancer.

    I don't see a problem changing jobs as long as there is absolutely no lapse in health insurance. Therein lies the problem, pre-existing condition if there is a lapse. Part time work generally does not include benefits in most jobs. I'm guessing your long term disability allowed you income while you were off for treatments. Personally, my opinion only, unless you absolutely hate your job I would stay put, but that is just me.

    I usually post on the colorectal cancer board. Throw this question out there on that board and you will get more specific answers. Some are quite knowledgable in the insurance area.

    When you leave one insurance plan, ALWAYS request a "certificate of insurance" from the plan you are leaving. You may go through your human resources department at your present employer. The certificate of insurance tells your next employer's insurance plan that you are "insurable" and provides seamless coverage.

    If you want to work part-time and can't obtain group coverage, you may buy health insurance through a "high-risk pool", receiving a federal subsidy to help pay premiums. Try contacting HHS via: http://www.healthreform.gov/contact/index.html to learn how to go about doing this.

    I hate my job, actually my
    I hate my job, actually my supervisor is the problem. I am stuck working there for insurance. I have stage 4 breast cancer so i feel that i do not have many options. My husband retired 3 years ago and does not have coverage and we have 19 year old daughter that i have to have coverage for so off to work i go. Every day is a struggle. So i guess the only advise i have for you and me to stay put for awhile, maybe the new health care reform laws will offer us a solution. take care

    Public Law 110-325 passed by both houses of Congress and signed into law by the president on September 25, 2008 protects employees with chronic illness from discrimination and even demands that they be afforded accommodations, like any other physically challenged person.     Thank you, Rick. I work for a very large Insurance Company, I am on FMLA so that i can go to the doctors and for treatment. I am still working full time and they do allow me to work at home. During the month of March, i paid 2 claims incorrectly and apparently I did not meet their stats. It is this particular supervisor that is mean to me, she is well loved by the company. I will tell you that she is smart, and really knows her job, but she does not have any compassion. Unfortunately, she is the one i have to deal with. So, my question is do i go above her to my manager and our director and talk to them. Will they just think i am using the cancer card? I am aware of being protected under ADA, however, the law does state that you must still be able to do your job according to the employers standards. Oh, i do hope there is hope for me! I really need this job, Thank you again for your response.

    I just read you web page. I see that you are involved in helping against job discrimination. This must be fate, or you are an angel sent to me! i live in the state of Pennsylvania, and i will keep this post in my favorites. I actually have been having IBS problems which are attributed to my job. Thank You again
