re-shave after hair grows back??

Hi All,

Just a quick question for anyone who's hair is coming back (or has in the past as the case may be)... Mine's just coming in (1/4 inch or so of delightful fuzz) but i've heard that it may be a good idea to shave it again at this stage?? Don't really know the thinking behind it but i assume it's something about the first bit of hair not being in great condition??

Anyone else heard/done this, or is it another bit of bogus cancer advice?

Thanks x

This is my 2nd 'hair coming back' experience.
I have just about the same amount of fuzz as you do right now, but have been through the re-growth experience once already. I would never shave off my fuzz, as I am already adding the 1/4-inch-per-month lengths in my mind to imagine when I might possibly have 'GIRL' hair again! It does come in baby-fine, but the later growth will fill in around that baby-hair and the 'chemo curls' will get pushed out on their own without shaving.

I think women shave their first growth initially more because it may not come in evenly or at the same time all over your head and they just want it to look neater and not as scraggly those first 3 or 4 months. (I even mine up with a scissors by just snipping off the few long hairs that got a head start on the others.) But I'm pretty sure it's an 'old wive's tale' that your hair will come in thicker if you shave. In 4 months you should have enough hair to warrant a visit to a salon for a cut-and-color! That's a happy exciting day to look forward to! I hope I can stay out of chemo long enough to do that!

    First Cut
Hi - I'm a little over 8 months off chemo and finally got a decent 'cut' last week (post-picture). I never shaved my head before treatment or since.
I was watching the hair grow back daily- like a garden or something. I know now of course that when/if I have chemo again, I can survive without the hair but it has been nice to see it again. I've already put color on it (same color as my wig) and it just has a little wave to it. No curls and it was silver in color but really soft.
It's different as I always had very long, straight hair so this new short look is quite different, but I'm having some fun with it.

If you really want your hair
If you really want your hair to come back you really don't have to shave it again.

What will happen is that it will come in soft and fine at first but over the course of time usually I noticed my would get back to normal in 7-8 months and then BAM my good old kinky hair would be back. :-D

As you can see, I'm actually having fun with the attention I get from sporting my bald and for me I've found it quite liberating to where for a while. I have to shave mine now about every 2 weeks?

But your hair will come back eventually, but you just have to be patient.

    Baldness
Sharon you look so glamorous bald - you should be proud of your luck and I applaud you for being bald. I always used to go out in my wig and as I go more confident I began to wear a scarf. However I have always wanted the courage to go out bald. So I was sitting in our local pub talking to friends (in my wig) when I had a hot flush that was so uncomfortable. I just took my wig off!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! My friend who had breast cancer didn't bat an eye lid but my husband was quite shocked and looked embarassed. But the looks I got from people in the pub (who know me and know I've got cancer) was funny as they all did a "double take". I am so glad I've done because I am me with no hair. I often feel like I am wearing a mask when I have my wig on.

I've just finished chemo (2 1/2 weeks since the last one) and am waiting eagerly for my hair to grow back. At the moment it is very very tiny fluff, but I can feel it all over. My hair usually grows quite fast so I am hoping it will this time.

I think I may get a photo taken of me bald and post it on here as my profile picture.

    Thanks for replies...
    Cheers for the advice guys...

Still in two minds about what to do, but i reckon i'll just let it grow out as it is cause my scalps quite irritable so shaving might cause some problems

+ like what everyone says i'm kinda lovin the soft fuzz! What's more exciting for me though is my eyebrows & lashes comin back, they seem to be coming in a lot faster :) think i may have even missed them more!
