We just found out that our daughter has thyroid cancer. She had one lobe of her thyroid removed two weeks ago and the pathologist report came in today that she has a micro invasive follicular cancer. In another two weeks she is scheduled to have the rest of her thyroid removed. She is only 26. What can I tell her that will give her some positive reinforcement??? Thanks.

As a daughter with Thyroid Cancer.....
You just keep giving her positive thoughts. If you are close enough to help her out during and after her surgery do it...if not call her as often as she likes and talk with her. Learn all about her condition, treatment, etc so that you know what to expect. Listen to her.....hug her if you can....let her know that you love her! If you believe in the power of prayer, pray for her and let her know that you are doing that. You don't have to do or say anything special.....just love her. I'm 49 and found out in March that I have Thyroid Cancer. My parents are in Florida. My mom offered to fly home for my surgeries, but I told her to stay where she was. I had enough help and the surgeries weren't that bad. Let her decide what she wants and needs from you!

My daughter is 12 with thyroid cancer
What you can do is be there for her, to listen to her when she needs someone to talk to or cry. My daughter had a total thyroidectomy on January 21 and she is doing well especially for her age. Between missing some days from school trying to explain to her friends and teachers. Her friends have been great as well as family. Just be there to listen and she will tell you what she needs. Good luck to your daughter and your family.

Your post just made me cry!
I can't imagine a 12 year old with Thyroid cancer. It's hard enough for me to deal with at 49! No child should ever have to go through this! I worry about how this is affecting my 14 year old daughter......worrying about her mom.........hugs to a good dad and his special daughter. I hope and pray that she has a full recover.....and a wonderful future full of all that life has to offer!

    My dad
I was diagnosed with thyroid cancer July '09 at 36 yrs old. My dad was there every step of the way. He made sure he listened without being intrusive. He didn't push me to talk if I wasn't feeling up to it. It is hard to explain the emotions we feel when being diagnosed with cancer and the effects of being hypothyroid if she goes through that too.

Just be there for her and love her with no limits!

Good luck with everything and I hope for the best for her in this trying time.

I am 21 and my Mom has been
I am 21 and my Mom has been great. Had my thyroid removed back in June and it has really been a struggle since but she has been so supportive. She has listened when i needed to talk and talked to me when i needed some encouragement. And the hugs help a lot :) She has also been extremely patient with my emotional downs and anxiety and stuff like that. It's a rough road but having someone support you throughout it is a huge help.

Thank you all for the replies. My daughter and I are best friends (her words). I will be there for her and I will love her without question. Fortunately I can be with her during her surgery and I can take care of her two Border Collies during her recovery. She tells me she is ok with the situation, even though a bit bummed out about the bad luck! She is an engineer, I am a chemist, her mom is a biologist and her brother is also an engineer. So, we all know the science around this cancer, but we still don't like it. I lost both parents to cancer and my wife lost her mother to cancer. Why can't it leave us alone!! I know, it doesn't pick us, it just happens. So thanks again for the replies, and thanks for giving me a place to vent.

    Be there for her
to support her, but give her space to absorb it all. It can be overwhelming, but having her family there for support is so essential.

My family has been great to me too, although there were times I was by myself, like the day I was told I had thyroid cancer. It may sound strange, but there have been times when I've gone to doctors appointments or tests by myself, when it was just routine. Now I never know if a visit will be routine, but I still don't mind being by myself sometimes. It gives me time to process things before I have to explain them to someone else.

All in all, just be there for her, but let her have her space too.
