Hello~
I am hoping you can help me with a question. I am getting ready for surgery on APril 6th to remove a tumor in my lower abdomen and also to close a wound that developed from surgery last year and became necrotizing faciitis. pretty scary but eventually was controlled with antibiotics. When you have had abdominal surgery are you usually given antibiotics? I am trying to determine why my surg onc has prescribed any yet and if I should be on them, even as a precaution what antibiotic is usually given.
Thank you in advance for your help.
Mary

    None Prior to surgery
I didn't receive any before surgery, but I seem to recall receiving prophylactic antibiotics in my IV during the recovery period, and I was given antibiotics to take at home due to the "bag o' pee" I had to cart around with me for a week or so!

If it's something you're concerned about, talk to your surgeon about it. Believe me, he wants you to avoid complications almost as much as you do! He'll either agree that it's a good idea, or explain to you his reasons for not prescribing them.

I'm beginning to learn to ask when I want more information (Of course, I'm also learning to stop explanations when I DON'T want to know more!)

    Good luck, hon!

    No, for me
I still believe in only giving anti biotics for a reason. Too many germs have become resistant because of over use. Saundra
