Daughter having scope and endoscopy on the 23rd...

So my 24 year old daughter told me about two weeks ago that she's been having bowel problems since about August and thought she'd tell me.

I immediately called my surgeon and he's doing a colonoscopy and an endoscope on her this next Tuesday. Mostly because of our family history, but then again, mostly because he can't diagnose without doing the tests. He seriously thinks it's IBS. I hope to God it is. He told me when she was out of the room he just recently diagnosed a 28 year old with colon cancer. I'm glad she didn't hear that, but really, this cancer is not an old person's disease. I'm seeing more and more young people diagnosed with cc. Maybe it's because I'm more aware of it now than when my dad had it.

Please, say a few prayers, send good vibes, dance sideways or whatever you do that things are going to be fine.

    I'm sorry that your daughter has to go through that,but I hope it is IBS also,not you know what.Colon cancer is not an old persons disease.I have a neighbor who is having a recerance at 19.I will pray send a lot of good vibes,and do a little dance that everthing goes ok.

    I am sorry to hear your daughter is having these issues, but I am glad she is have the testing done. You + your daughter are in my thoughts, + I am hoping for good news.

    I am so sorry that you and your daughter are having to deal with this. I know you must be beside yourself with worry, that's what parents do. I have and will continue to pray for a nothing serious diagnosis.

    No it is not and we are seeing more and more young people getting it. I think the guidelines for testing need to be changed considering all of the young folks who are being told they probably have hemorrhoids and then get dx'd with CC.My Mom's neighbor is 32, has 2 small toddlers, and is stageIV.Her Mom can't help much with the children because she is stage IV breast cancer.

    Hoping your daughter's tests show nothing serious
    Cancer doesn't discriminate, age doesn't deter it from attacking but its best to test ASAP once a problem arises.....Had I been tested earlier (at age 50 or so)I'd probably never have found need for this site.....steve

    I went through the same worries that you are right now,my surgeon told me that both my children should be tested, that was more than 3 1/2 years ago,my father had CC as well, my daughter had abdominal pain, bloating and other symtoms that I had read about on this board,let me tell you that I was seriously worry,I told her that she needed to have a colonoscopy,and she did, one month after my surgery, everything was fine clear colonoscopy, with my son I have been begging him for more than 3 years, he is 32, and finally he agreed about 3 weeks ago,after I asked him one more time if he was having any rectal bleeding or other symtoms,and told me that he had some blood a couple of times, I freaked out, and did an appoitment for the colonoscopy, he just pass with flying colors, all clear, they found internal hemorroids, so RELAX I am sure that your daughter will be fine too,I have a lot of faith and pray a lot, and I will be praying for your daughter too, I know how you are feeling.

    thank you for this post. My daughter is 28 and I have never pushed for a scope for her but I think this convinces me i should.

    Hey Holly - Sending many sparks to you and your daughter. I'm 38. Stage IV. My 10, 8 and 4 year old children will be scoped in their 20's for sure. My doctor tole me that a good rule is to test all children, and blood related nieces and nephews, when they turn 10 years younger than when a person is diagnosed. I was dx when I was 38; so my kids should be tested when they are 28. I doubt we will wait that long. Hope everything is fine on Tuesday.

    Thanks for your post. I'm not really worried that anything is wrong, but I will feel about 110% better knowing she's been scoped and nothing is there.

    I'm still trying to get my older brother who is turning 50 this year to go. He's sure that insurance won't pay until he's 50 which I told him was hogwash. Family history would be reason enough to go, ya think?

    I think people are just afraid to have one because they fear bad news. I had no signs of symptoms of anything wrong, and I wasn't expecting the news I got, but I'm so grateful that the little voice in my head was screaming at me to go. (I think it was my dad yelling at me every day to go) I hate to think of what the diagnosis would have meant in another 6 months.

    She is excellent...
    She had her colonoscopy and she is clean as a whistle. Doc said even with family history, he's comfortable if she comes back in 5 to 8 years. However, she had 4 polyps in her stomach. I've been a nurse for a zillion years and have never heard of polyps in the stomach. It's obviously possible, but really didn't expect that. He took 2 for biopsy. He said that stomach polyps are like a one in a million chance that they're cancerous. He diagnosed her with IBS and told her to take mirilax and zantac for her stomach and bowel problems.

    So great news today!!

    I totally agree
    I totally agree that the testing guidelines need to be changed, my son is 31 and one of the gentleman I work with has a son also 31 that is dealing with the very same thing. If it was so rare in younger people I think the odds would be great that there would not be two parents going through the same thing with their children in as small of an area we live in. If they had done the tests earlier on my son because it is in the family I am sure he would not be stage IV. That is the problem with it not being tested for earlier is that when these young people get it diagnosed they are usually quite a aways into the disease. I asked the oncologist, when Scott was diagnosed what we could have done or should have noticed earlier, his reply was it is just the way it is because had he gone in a few months or a year earlier it was unlikely they would have done the test to find it because it is considered rare in his age group. At least now that we know all my sons will be checked earlier and their children in turn will be tested earlier.
    Holly I am sorry that you are having to go through this worry but glad that they are checking her out to make sure it is IBS not something more serious. IBS is pretty controlable with diet and such, will definately be praying for you and your daughter that all comes out ok for her. I cannot imagine what it would be like for you yourself to be going through this then having to have to face your daughter going through it too. Way too much stress and worry for you both.

    Tell you brother my oldest son just got his done and the insurance covered it and he is 33, they covered it because his brother had just been diagnosed with it. All he needs to do is call his insurance and ask or better yet have his doctor request it through the insurance as a preapproval. If it preapproved given family history then he is in the clear to have one doen. I have a brother who is in his 60's and he has only had the colonoscopy done once, his doctor deos not believe in doing them very often but if I were him I would find another doctor that would do it. Our father had colon cancer now his nephew does the fact that none of us out of our generation has not had it scares me that one of us will sooner or later have it. I realize I should not necessarily think that but what are the odds that it skipped a generation. It has not skipped a generation before since my dad's aunt had it before he did. I, myself have to get another colonoscopy as it has been 7 years since I had one but I really did not realize it had been that long until I asked my doctor the other day. I will admit to dragging my feet some because I hate the prep but I will make myself go very soon. I have had my gall bladder remored in the last year and had a couple of ultrasounds and a cat scan previous to that so it makes me feel better to know nothing showed up during all that.
    Glad your daughter is getting checked though, now convice that brother to if you can.

    Very good news
    That is very good news!!! I know when my oldest son had his I was waiting pretty anxiously for the results and he too came out clean. A couple of polyps and they removed them and they came back negative so no worries there.
