Has any one experienced a stomach hernia while on FOLFOX treatment or after surgery?
If so did you wait to have it repaired after the treatments?

    Incisional hernias
Yup. I have incisional hernias that appeared after my FOLFOX treatment, tho I understand they are common with this kind of major abdominal surgery. To date, mine have not been repaired as they are not causing problems. They were found 15 months ago with one of my CT scans. Next visit, next CT in May, and we may be scheduling the repair then.

You'll probably wait until you're done with the FOLFOX, particularly if you are also getting Avastin, before the repair. The repair surgery is pretty major - not what most people understand as "hernia surgery". I've had several friends have the repair done, surprised that it wasn't "standard hernia surgery". I've been told to expect 3 months of restricted activity post-op.

Good luck - as long as your hernia isn't causing problems, they can probably delay surgery. I do wear supportive clothing when I'm active to help protect myself.

thank you for your comment...I don't have to get Avastin...mine is a minor defect was detected after my 3rd round and its a small bulge now but it doesn't hurt so I will take your suggestion and get the supportive gear...I'm thinking that the surgeon can take care of it when I get the mediport out...One shot deal :)

    Hi Victory
I had a large incisional hernia post-surgery. I had colon Rx, liver Rx, then liver RFA. Three major cuts! We left it for a couple of years until I was "stable". They repaired it with mesh last summer and it has been good ever since.

Hold on until your treatment is over and things are stable if you can. If yours is small they could probably gi it laprascopically.

    Be well... Rob; in Vancouver

    yeah
    I had my cclostomy take

    yeah

I had my cclostomy take down in Feb 09. Had I known then the issues with hernias I think I would have been more demanding with my surgeon to have her put a mesh in then. But I didn't know...in June 09 I had a yearly CT scan that showed a "very large hernia" at the site. I thought it was kinda bulging. Then the surgeon said "oh yeah these are very common"- she left it up to me to have it repaired and I did in July 09. I thought in and out, no big deal. Well it was- I was in 2 nights and thankfully my colon didn't shut down, otherwise I would have been in longer. NG tube in, liquids until bowel sounds, then semi liquids until BM- I was running up and down the halls, drinking gallons of liquids and sweet talking to my colon to get me outta there soon. I think my Mayo colorectal surgeon overkilled that on that one- had I lived closer to Rochester, probably would have let me go before she did.

    Abdominal Hernia
I have an incisional abdominal hernia. It sounds similar to Rob's. I got it from lifting things that were too heavy and I wasn't wearing any type of support for my abdomen.

I have not bothered to have it repaired, I wear something now when I do yard work. It's cosmetic as far as I'm concerned and I do not feel like having another surgery just because of that. The first 2 were enough thank you very much...

    Hi
I had my hernia fixed two weeks ago. The recommendation for me was to get it fixed before it got bigger and required a bigger surgery. Mine ended up being double the size then the surgeon thought. I feel good and taking really great good care of myself, I don't want to over do it. My family believes I got the hernia because I was painting the house and working on my yard after a liver resection and not sitting still.... go figure! lol

    Take it easy!

    They put me out
general anethesia. The incision is about 3 inches long and follows the same incision for my colorectal surgery. Open surgery right around the left side and below the belly button.
