A report from John Hopkins says chewing sugarless gum after colon cancer surgery can reduce your recovery stay in hospital by several days......."Chewing gum triggers the same reflex as eating, stimulating gasstrointestinal hormones connected with bowel activity".....Article does not mention nature of surgery (colostomy?)....Since we usually aren't allowed to eat for a few days ,this might help those of you facing surgery in the future. More detailed reports should follow in other publications....Chew your way to a faster recovery.....steve

    Nice to meat chew.

You don't have to be limited to gum, Steve.

You can have White Castle Hamburgers if you want,
    just don't swallow.

Years ago, John, after a long night of drinking, etc,
a couple of those little White Castle burgers used to clean out my insides for me.....Stuff would be coming out of me at both ends at the same time the next morning---no need for go litely then!!!!!....steve

    chewing gum
will also help to keep your mouth moist. Chemo is very hard on the teeth and dry mouth isn't good...so says my dentist.Sugarfree, of course.

    Thanks for the info
Your timing couldn't be better...as my surgery is this Friday...will be sure to pack some surgarless gum in my bag.

Odd isn't it, what everyday things can make a difference...

To better days and better health

    Different Philosophies
My surgeon wouldn't even let me have ice chips, let alone chewing gum, for 5 days. I wish I had asked the surgeon before surgery what and when I would be allowed to eat or drink.
