Care giving...

I'm currently caring for my 54 y/o sister who has ovarian cancer. she had surgery on 11/15/09
and has had four chemo-treatments. over the weekend she ended up in ICU in Bemidji then flown back to the U of MN she has pneumonia and a blood infection. Not sure how to keep her upbeat when she is so uncomfortable. Support groups?

    Tim,

    I took care of my mother when she had peritoneal cancer last year. You might contact Cancer Action in your area if there is one and ask for advise. Being comfortable is such a personal thing. For my mother, the only comfort she had was her privacy, she really didn't want others to see her so ill. Just be very honest with your sister and say, "I want to help, I want to make you more comfortable, tell me what you need, because I am not sure."

    You are great to be there for your sister. When I am in the hospital, I usually just like to sleep. My lips get very dry so a Chap Stick might help. Amy is right, just ask her. The U of MN should have some support for you...social services or the like. Saundra
