Eating after 80% Stomach Removed

My dad had 80% of his stomach removed on 1/20/10. After surgery he had other issues and is now also on kidney dialysis. He is still experiencing eating problems. Every so often he gets a gag reflex when he is eating. He can only get about 2 small meals down a day. Does anyone have any advice on how to eat? Is there anything you can take to settle the stomach from the bile? Any suggestions are truly appreciated. Thank you.

Hi Sadler,
Sorry to hear
Hi Sadler,
Sorry to hear that you and your dad are going through this rough time. My dad has survived esophageal cancer, his tumor was at the junction to his stomach. He now is fighting liver cancer. I would think that small meals would be the answer. To eat slowly. I know that taking ginger is helpful for nausea. You can put ground ginger into capsules, or drink ginger ale. I would have him do this before meals. Maybe finding someone who has had the surgery to have your stomach stapled could help you. Best of luck. Let us know how he is making out.

settling bile tips
my friend had 80% removed 1/16/10. for nausea due to bile, MD recommended taking metoclopromide four times a day and to tilt the head of bed up. we put phone books under the bed posts at the head. this sort of helped. my friend then decided to sleep on his right side, b/c the gallbladder which squirts the bile into the small intestine (now attached to the middle of the stomach) is on the right side of the body. the logic is that the bile flows from right (gallbladder) to left (stomach), so by sleeping on the right side, the bile will not accumulate in the stomach causing nausea and eating problems. my friend is 74 years old and no nausea anymore. hope this helps, i thought it was a creative solution.0 -
Eating after stomach removal
Hi,
I'm a 51 year old female who had a subtotal gastrectomy (75% stomach removal) 2 1/2 years ago.
The first 18 months following surgery were a challenge due to nausea, vomiting, irritable bowel, dumping syndrome and blood sugar fluctuations. It does get better, so tell your father to hang in there.
Small meals throughout the day have been helpful in keeping symptoms under control. I avoid dairy products and keep sugars at a minimum. Citrus foods can also be an irritating. I snack on nuts and granola bars.
Best of luck.0 -
I had 85% gastrectomy done
I had 85% gastrectomy done almost four month ago. I do experience gag reflex sometimes if I swallow something not in a correct manner, it will make me vomit. Its getting better little by little now.
Chew very carefully and swallow slowly helped me. Hopefully it will help your daddy too.0
