how many of you dyed your new hair and how soon?

Experience
I would find out what kind of experience the one who said she could dye it permanently has. My girlfriend of over 40+ years is a beautician. She has a couple clients who have had chemo and lost their hair. She's had experience with coloring & straightening (as apparently we all need as well) and is very confident that we'll get it right as soon as it starts to bloom, lol. I'm telling everyone that my hair will be blooming with the flowers (at least I'm hoping). I still have just a little bit of peach fuzz but it's already looking curly. My friend is also giving me a special shampoo & conditioner that is supposed to help hair grow faster. I'll be happy to share that with everyone once I get it as I don't know what the name of it is.
Wow! At least I can begin to talk about hair growing in instead of losing it! Things do get better, don't they?
Let us know what happens, Pat, and GOOD LUCK!

...I've been wigless now for just over a month. I always colored it before - it has come back very salty (with a little pepper) and is super curly - I never realized your hair grows up! I've been trying to decide on coloring again as well. I've read so much lately about how bad everything is we put on our bodies - from the shampoo we use to lotions, makeup and of course hair dye. I know someone a while back had mentioned trying henna. I'm so glad my hair is back - I'm just not sure I'm ready to be gray yet - then I think about how easy it is and this is me - natural!
keep us posted with your decision - I'm sure whatever you decide will turn out lovely!

Hi, Pat, my hair came back
Hi, Pat, my hair came back more salt than pepper, and I had it colored (permanent) as soon as my hair stylist (and great friend) told me I could. Which was as soon as it was at least 1/4 inch long. So far, I've had it colored twice with no damage to my hair at all. Nothing but a rich, auburn color!
Best of luck to you. Looking forward to seeing a pic when you do color your hair.0 -

Good luck in getting your hair colored Pat. I know it will make you feel better. But, I bet you look great now, even with the salt and pepper color. Post a pic if you do get it colored!0 -

My mom's hairdresser advised me to wait until my hair is about 1 inch long and then SHAVE IT AGAIN. According to her, the course chemo hair will be gone and the new hair will be nice and full. I don't know if this hairdresser has ever had chemo, and I know she is trying to help, but I really don't want anyone advising me to shave my head when my hair is just now returning after 7 months. I have about an inch of hair
I have about an inch of hair and I'm afraid to dye it....and NO not everyone is salt and pepper, I wanted salt and pepper and I got my same of ugly dirty dishwater blonde stuff LOL, it's very thin, and see through, it scares me. I hope it fills out. I used to weave my hair all the time, don't think I'll touch it any time soon, what little bit I have is too precious to me Good Luck!!

Pat, I had mine colored
Pat, I had mine colored professionally in a permanent color exactly 4 months after I finished chemo. I did check with my onco about doing this and she said "no problem". It came out beautifully. My hair was salt and pepper and I colored it a dark auburn. I love not having to wear hats and scarves anymore. I have gotten many, many comments on how good it looks and I should consider keeping my hair that short. I don't know about those comments but it sure does give me some courage and confidence. Good luck and tell us what you decide.0 -

Is their anyone out there who has NOT had curly air grow back in? I have about 1/8t of and inch back so far and it's a little darker, and may be curly. I would look horrible with tight curles! lol..my mom has a friend who does hair and has done a bunch of chemo hair and says that after the first time you cut it, (but who wants to, here's the dilemma), it stops coming in so currrrly and goes back to whatever you had before. Anyone had any experience with NOT getting curly?
Thanks,

I agree with you, before it fell out my hair was a bit longer than my bra strap. I had finally grown it out healthy, and BAM! lol...but I too, am thinking of keeping like that "Pixie" cut when it grows back. then I wont' have to worry about the curlienss, and I got alot of compliments on how I was so lucky to have a good shaped head and face that looked very good bald! I hardly wore my wig,(whichmy mom issnt too happy about, as she paid for 1/2 of it, cuz it was NOT cheap!),so I hardly ever wore a wig, and never wore a har or wrap of some kind. Just went bald. Alot of times, cuz I didn't care, I was too sick, and I jsut don't see the point in getting dolled up to see the Dr. and nurses for appoitnments or infusions! lol....and those are about the only places I have been for about 8 months. Oh,except the Pharmacy. I have gotten to know my Pharmacist quite well, as I am there about 2-3 times a week! Anyone else know their pharmacist more than they'd like to?? lol

My hair is about 3 1/2 inches long now...yippee! It came back in really gray and it is now really curly...I started dying my hair as soon as it was about 1/2". It was suggested that I start out with a semi-permanent or vegan type dye so I didn't hurt the new hair. After a couple of months I ended up using a permanent dye. Now I am going to try and straighten it. Going to buy a straightener tomorrow!0 -

Jilly, my hair did not come back in curly. I have always had pencil-straight hair and that's just the same way it came back in. I'm like you, I didn't want curly hair either. I wouldn't know what to do with it!! LOL.0 -
I didn't read all the
I didn't read all the responses, so I don't know if this was suggested, but how about some of that Fanciful hair color rinse? You could try that first for a while.
I think the wig salon told me not to color my hair for 6 months. She said then sometimes it's hard to color and won't hold the color, so you might have to dye it twice.
I'll probably do highlights or something as soon as it's long enough. 6 months seems like a long time.
OH, I'm 42, and my hair is about 1/4" long now, and it's coming in dark brown.0 -

I don't think that hairdresser knows what she's talking about! My hair is now 2 inches long and soft as a baby's......it is NEW HAIR .......My hair is as full as before just not as long! And.......it is CURLY CURLY CURLY.....never had that before......I love it, easiet hair do I have ever had! Everyone I know who's had chemo, their hair has come back in very soft! As for coloring it, mine came back in salt and pepper, more salt and my natural dark color in the back......never had that before, so I colored it using L'Oreal Color Spa, it's kind of hard to find, I buy it at Ulta......it is not a permanent dye, it washes out in about two months..........my hair looks great! I was told to not use heat on it, such as a blow dryer or flat iron because it is so soft....I just wash these curls, then put Got 2B Glued on it......then when I wake up in the morning, I just wet my hands to reactivate the Got 2B Glued and run my fingers through my hair and away I go!
Also, my oncologist said that the curliness will last about 12-18 months, then the hair usually reverts back to the way it was before chemo.......and that has been the experience of many women I know who have gone through this.........
DON"T SHAVE YOUR HEAD, please.........smiling at you!

My chemo ended on 10/30. I was ready to go without a wig, but my hair was more white than I remembered it being before. ;-) It's now a nice dark blonde/light brown and looks great. I'd say it's about an inch long all over. ;-)

I have been wondering about this also...my hair came in same as was before..thick, straight and dark brown but i always highlighted it. I wonder about highlighting? Is this ok or is it too harsh??0
