Post Op News

Hi all!

Post Op news: staples and catheter come out tomorrow! My husband bought me an expensive bottle of wine so we can celebrate this weekend!

Question: My surgeon said he was able to remove 95% of the cancer and that chemo would take care of the rest. Do i really want to know about the remaining 5%? Is this the norm?

OY, so many milestones so far.

Surgery : check
Farting : check
Liquids : check
Solids : check
Discharge; check
Sleep in own bed: check
poo: check (recommend prune juice and warm water btw)
staples removed: pending
Urinate: pending
Celebration: Scheduled for Saturday night, Raise a glass with me at 8p.m. EST!


That's as far as ahead as i'm looking right now. If i listed my to do list for the next 20 years, I'd bore ya'll to tears!

One final note, my computer isn't working so I'm using my daughter's when I can. Don't worry if I'm not around for a few days!

    I was never told how much cancer was remaning so I have no idea if the 5% is good or bad. Everything else sounds great!
    Good luck. When do you start chemo? Did you ever get staged?

    you have an honest surgeon
    You have the good fortune to have not only an honorable surgeon, but an honest one. You will hear the phrase "optimal debulking" which means the surgeon got all the cancer they could see. However, there is always cancer that cannot be seen, so "optimal debulking" may not be a very accurate concept. Your surgeon told you what he saw and did, which is great. I personally know two surgeons who would lie without blinking about such things. You are lucky to have this man on your team.

    My doctor didn't give me percentages removed/remaining, either. Five percent sounds pretty small to me, though. And if he said chemo would take care of the rest, I would believe him.

    Staging is often the best indicator of what the surgeon found. If you want to know, ask him what stage you are. I wanted to know, but some patients don't. It's your call.

    I was stage 3c, due to the tumor in my bowel. You can Google "staging ovarian cancer" and learn exactly what each stage/sub-stage means.

    I'm delighted to hear that you are feeling so well and have plans to celebrate. I hear that red wine is good for the red blood count, so indulge yourself.

    Hi Nancy,

    While I don't remember much about my post op conversation with him (why do doctors come talk to you right after operations anyway?lol) I do remember asking him if it was 3c as we expected. He said it was. He had told me during our initial consultation that according to the CT scan that's what he expected, so I wasn't disappointed or alarmed, but instead relieved to find out that the only surprises were small spots on my bowel and bladder that could be removed and "oversewn" (My husband said that means he basically "darned my socks").

    I meet with my chemo/oncologist on March 1st, so I've officially declared that this next week is my "CancerCation." I'm going to relax and heal and find my inner zen for the next leg of the journey!
