Live from Vancouver!
Olympic spirit has hit a fever pitch in Vancouver as the start of the 2010 Winter Games draws near. Yesterday I had to plan my Chemo trip to avoid the "torch relay" which is meandering through Vancouver and suburbs.
Tomorrow morning Pam wants to drag me out at 6 AM so we can see California Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger carry the torch through Stanley Park! She's been a fan since "Conan the Barbarian" days! Whew! Who remembers that!
Weather-wise, it is anything but winter. Mild and rainy!
Opening Ceremonies are tomorrow evening and then it is two weeks of hockey, skating, skiing, sliding, and curling.
Anybody coming to Vancouver? I can get you tickets for the Canada-USA Hockey finals ($2000/seat!!)

Importing Snow!coloCan said:High Rob,
Is it true they're gonna import snow for Olympics by you? Steve
The freestyle skiing and snowboarding events are on a local mountain (Cypress Mountain) with very little snow. Right now we are hauling it by truck about 160 miles from the mountains to the east of Vancouver. Organizers seem confident that they will have a workable venue.
Most of the big ski events, downhill, giant slalom, jumping, etc, are in Whistler. They have plenty of snow.
We could import some from the US East but I don't know how that would work under the Canada-US Free-Trade agreement!! There would have to be large duties, no doubt! LOL

Rob,
Enjoy!! I saw the torch go through Boston a few years back and it was great. Also when the games were in LA I went to track and field. If you can go to something I highly recommend it.
I know Vancouver will host a fantastic olympics!
Aloha,

We live downtown so are close to the hockey venue. Most of the tickets are too pricey for us. We'll take in some of the free events and watch what we can online or at local pubs!
I'm glad you were able to do an Alaska cruise. We lived 20+ years on the North Coast, Queen Charlotte Islands, etc. Beautiful country.
Be well... Rob; in Vancouver0 -

the closing ceremonies, and everything in between...I am an Olympic fanatic.....Winter and Summer......I love it, no rebellious individuals, simply nations coming together participating in joy, happiness, and competition in spirit...The way it should be, with or without the Olympics........Robinvan and Family....enjoy it all......Love and Hope, Buzz0 -
WISH I WAS THERE!!!
I am so envious of you Rob! I'm a total Olympic junkie too. I was majorly bummed when Chicago lost out since it would have been in my hometown's backyard.
Loved hearing Joni last night (been fan since the '70s), the awesome punk cloggers, and the incredible special affects with the whales.
If you go to any venues please share with us.

I have very fond memories of 8 years ago when Salt Lake City hosted the winter games. There is so much to do without spending a small fortune. There were free concerts every night. Big names at the time. Creed, Dave Mathews Band {bad spelling}, etc. Take in everything you can. Just the atmosphere of having the whole world in your city is amazing. Have fun.

Opening Days
The opening days of the Olympics have brought a wide range of events and emotions. We followed the torch relay on Friday morning and saw Arnold in Stanley Park. It looked like the whole city was out along the torch route. Great support from Vancouver.
The opening ceremonies were awesome. We watched them with a small crowd at our favorite local pub. The music, special effects, parade of countries... all great.
We were deeply saddened to learn of the death of the Luge slider from Georgia. So sad. It reminds us of how incredibly dangerous some of these sports are, with people traveling over 80 mph on sleds and skis in the downhill.
The US and Canada have the largest teams here. both around 206 or 208. The US is slightly larger than Canada. So far the US is leading in the medal count.
