I was recently on line and read about a Dr Brad Thompson an oncologist and CEO of Oncolytics Biotech Inc. a biotech company in Calgary Canada.The article was about a way to fight cancer by injecting a virus that people usually get when their young and attacks cells in the body similar to cancer cells.Thus re injecting people with cancer and this virus kills the cancer cells.It is currently in phase 3 trials.On a comment section in the article a person wrote that the CEO of the American Cancer Society John Seffrin makes 975,000 dollars a year.

My question is is he the CEO of the American Cancer Society and is that his salary and most important where does it come from.
People like me who do all these cancer walks and beg people to sponser us for these walks so this clown can get his money.Unless he gets it from an outside source and if so who they are so we can clear the air.
I am a patient advocate for the Leukemia Lymphoma Society and a copy of this letter is being sent to them and my congressmen and women and senators.
I awit your response to this disturbing allegation.

    Where you are posting this is mostly for Caregivers of people with Cancer, it would be better on some other post. All the best to you on getting the answer to your questions

    If the CEO of ACS does indeed make nearly a million dollars in salary yearly (and it would not surprise me), your rage in discovery of such is understandable. A number of friends I made on this site have left one time or another when they came to feel that it was more about money than providing the best possible service to survivors and caregivers.

    Still, in a moment of reflection you might acknowledge that this CEO is running a major corporation regardless of where the funds come from. As I understand it, ACS has offices in every major and many 'mid-major' cities in the US. My assumption is that ACS has a lot of employees. I know that they put out a magazine, I know that they offer programs both local and national in scope, I know that they provide services -- often to your front door or bank account -- nationwide.

    Someone has to oversee those who oversee those who oversee these programs and services.

    I am not trying to justify the guy's salary. It always seems crude to learn that the leader of a charitable institution is raking in the bucks, I agree. But before going off on the guy, it might be prudent to compare his salary to others who are running companies of similar size and scope. I do not know what you will find, quite honestly, but look forward to the results.

    In the meantime, to change subjects, I am perplexed as to why this post was flagged. I read nothing that was offensive (except, perhaps, to ACS and its CEO) or sales-oriented or which might lead to dangerous behavior.

    And I am perplexed by the follow-on post by this hondo character suggesting that the original writer take it somewhere else. When this hondo person becomes the arbiter of what is permitted and where, it will be time for people of reason to vacate the premises. Frankly, I found that second post to be the offensive one among the two.

    Ok, Joe, for the most part I liked your answer. I did look a few things up and found that, indeed, the CEO of ACS does make a lot of money. It is not, however, out of line with the salaries for other executives in similar positions. Would I like him to take less? Sure, but I have not put out the time and effort it would take to be on the ACS Board, so I don't know how that salary was decided upon. Besides, what the CEO makes does not negate the good that ACS does. Also, I have been in the position of managing volunteers a time or two. Let me tell you, that is not an easy thing to do. I have no doubt that the CEO is a very busy person.

    Hey, Hondo, I also have no problem with you suggesting that another forum might be a better one to post the original comment. You're entitled to your opinion. I don't know why anyone would bother to flag this, though. It's not offensive to me. It's just incomplete. If the poster really wants the answers to his questions, it only takes a quick online search to find them. If he doesn't like the way ACS is run, he can take the time and effort to get on their board, or he can take his money elsewhere. We all have choices in life sometimes. Fay

    I saw a therapist. He said it wasn't anger. He said it was contempt. He said it would be abnormal to feel otherwise.

    Robert, I do not know where these funds come from, however I hope it is not from the walks we all do to fight for the cure. My sister was extremely involved in these walks and I participated with her as it was important to her. It would insult me to think she did all that to line someones pockets. I do not know if it is true the CEO makes that kind of money but it is a very real possibility.

    I also see this is your first post and do not want you to feel as if you cannot post here, you most certainly can. I am a breast cancer survivor and was a caregiver for my sister. I post here, on the breast cancer board, the in memory of board even the colon cancer board and I do not have colon cancer. Feel free to post where you feel your message is best set for the audience you are trying to reach. Welcome, I wish you well.

    Hondo I came in here to read what Joe had responded to because I know Joe and respect his opinion and his view of things. First I see you suggest a new first time poster post elsewhere but you neglected to give this new person any guidance as to where the other place to post on this site should be so apparently he only posted here since it shows he has only posted one time. It is quite possible this person is a caregiver. I am both and I come here and post sometimes, but I would come here even if I had never been a caregiver as I think these boards are open to all of us. In addition Hondo I do not want to sound Grrrrish but I feel we must be respectful of all who come here and telling someone to get help with a personal issue (which in my mind Joe does not have, I feel since I have known him for a few years and have had many a conversation with him I would have realized it by now) on a public board is rather uncouth and most certainly not the Christian thing to do, I only mention the Christian thing because you call on your faith and use biblical quotes often. If you truly feel Joe is your friend as you state in your closing a PM message might have been better etiquette and not made this board appear to be confrontational to newcomers. I am not sending this via PM because I want newcomers to know it is okay to feel comfortable here and write what is on their minds and heart respectfully to one another.

    I too did not think of it as offensive just being in the wrong place. That is why I suggested that it would be better posted somewhere else, which the person did do under a diffrent user six times.

    I do have a question, how do you know when something is flagged, my understand is if something is flagged it is removed from the tread or marked Flagged, so I am trying to figure how Joe knows it had been flagged.
