There are a number of reasons to cough. The one that comes first to mind is aspiration. This results, as you probably know, from inhaling stuff you mean to go down your esophagus. If you have not yet had a swallow test, I would encourage you to do so immediately.

The second reason that comes to mind is closer to my heart: as a head/neck cancer survivor, I quit smoking upon arrival at the hospital for my pre-surgery testing. When a year and a half later I still had a cough, I asked my doc why and he sent me for both a CT and a PET scan, where cancer was found in my lung.

That is not meant to alarm you, but to alert you that SCC DOES tend to migrate to the lungs.

It sounds, though, like your issues have to do with swallowing, based on your brief description.

    Take care,

    Joe

    Aspiration
I am not familiar with the after effects of your cancer treatment, but I have some experience with aspiration. I did take a swallow test and in my case, there was leakage of liquids to my lungs. This caused coughing.

I used to cough when eating or drinking. One of the causes was those dry food articles in my throat. The other was aspiration. Here is a recommended solution by the doctor.

When swallowing (like liquid), we tend to look up when drinking. The specialist recommended that I do not swallow at the same time, but to place the liquid in my mouth. Then, I was to bend my head like looking at my plate or at the floor and swallow. This would be the same when eating.

He also prescribed a couple of exercises to close that thing that blocks of liquids when swallowing, but allows air to enter your lungs.

Check if you have this lung aspiration problem with this swallowing procedure.

    another question
Joe, I don't remember what SCC stands for but I had cancer on my vocal cord. My last treatment was 10/22/09 and I seem to cough worse now than I did when I smoked. My onco office says it is my throat trying to heal. Should I worry about the lung cancer?
I pray your lung cancer is now in remission also. I can't imagine being as strong as you and many others here who have gone thru 2 types of cancer. You guys (girls) are truly my heros!!!

Hi Deb. SCC is squamous cell carcinoma and it's likely that's what your throat cancer was. Its usual course is primary somewhere in the mucosa (if you're lucky) then local mets in the lymph (where it is usually discovered when the primary is occult). Depending on various factors, it then would go to lung then liver.

    More questions
Hi, Mick, I hope I don't become a pest to you but I have more questions. I am probably going to appear stupid but when it comes to cancer, I have to admit, I am stupid. I saw my ENT today before the biospy and I asked him if my cancer was SCC and YOU WERE RIGHT, IT IS SCC!!! I had NO IDEA! I aslo asked him if he felt it would spread to other places and he said no but if it did it would be lymphnodes in the neck, but he is pretty sure it wouldn't spread b/c they caught it early enuf. I had also read somewhere on here the vocal cord cancer CANNOT spread anywhere, it can only stay on the vocal cord. Naturally I was extremely happy know it COULDN'T SPREAD, but I ask my ENT if that is true and unfortunately he said NO. If the person who stated that it couldn't spread reads this, please tell me where that info came from.
Anyway, Mick, if you could answer my questins, I would greatly appreciate it. As I have proven with all my questions, I sure don't know much, heck, I didn't even know my cancer had a name other that vocal cord cancer....lol. That is another reason I'm so thankful for finding this site and all the members of my new family.
Thank you in advance, Mick, and I hope you know how much I appreciate you fantastic help as well as the help from all the others.
By the way, the biopsy went well and I will have the results Friday but I already know there WON'T be any cancer!! God takes very good care of me and I pray every night that he wil also take great care of all my new family members-my CSN family. Thanks evryone.
May God Bless YOU and Make/Keep You WELL!!

    Don't worry, be happy
I think that your doctor answered your question, debbie. He said that cancer on the vocal chords CAN spread, which would be an understandable bummer to you, but also said that yours was not likely to spread because it was caught in an early stage.

If I were you, I would be feeling pretty good about things right now, given that your doc is a competent and honest one.

    Take care,

    Joe

    Hi Debbie
Glad to hear the biopsy went well and if the ENT is not worried that too is a very good sign, let us know when you get the results.
