Sally,
I did not know of the Magic Mouthwash when I went thru my treatments 5 years ago. I was instructed to use a solution made at home using 1 teaspoon of Baking Soda and 1 teaspoon of Salt mixed in 1 quart of room temperature water. I was told to rinse/gargle with this solution roughly 3 times a day.
I tend to over do things and was using it almost every 30 minutes. It helped semi-numb my mouth and throat during and after my radiation only treatments. I increased the amounts to 1 Tablespoon of each as the treatments went on and it helped allot.
Gravey mentioned the Magic Mouthwash solution with something for Thrush. Fortunately, I didn't get any thrush.
To try and answer your question about radiation only. I was told by my team of Doctors that my cancer had not gone past the lymphnode that I had found early. They wanted to keep Chemo as a backup in case of any recurrance in the future. The Radiation Oncologist told me he could only radiate me once in the area I had my cancer which was the Base of my Tongue.

Larry's Solution #2
As for the mixture for thush prevention and such I was told also to rinse several times daily with a mixture of baking soda and H2O2 (hydrogen peroxide) in 1/4 cup of water.
As for a pain solution, my mixture was called Larry's Solution #2...like stated above it's a mixture of various pain killers and numbing solutions. Mine was thick and pasty looking or colored....
It did the trick short term (10 minutes tops), long enough to choke down some water, Ensure Plus...

I think the baking soda peroxide mix is more for your teeth and gum health, if you got any sores in your mouth from the radiation. Mine was either called Mikes or Dukes magic mouthwash, which like I stated, had stuff for pain, thrush, sores, and other stuff all wrapped up into one liquid concoction, they added cherry flavor to it to keep the bad taste down. You were supposed to swish it around for a little bit then swallow.
Hope this helps, you also can google it.......

Gravey,
Sure wish I knew of your solution when I was doing my treatments, it sounds pretty helpful. The Baking Soda and Salt solution that I used did the job for me and I didn't really have any pain until about week 5. Then I was given med's for the remainder of the treatments.

Hi Sally
Yes you will need to ask your doctor for it, I used the magic mouthwash through both treatments, it would numb my mouth but then that would make me gag, I found that if I mixed it 50/50 with water it did the same thing for the mouth but with no gagging.
My first cancer was radiation only because I caught it early, and the doctors did no see any need for the chemo.
Take care0 -

I also used all thru treatment. Does numb the mouth and take away the negative sensations that come with bigtime mouth sores. Walgreen's, I know, asks for a 24-hour lead time in preparing it. Also, when I spent 4 days in the hospital during week #6 of my treatment- the hospital provided me with it. My Onco prescribed it right from the get-go. Not sure what it is, though I do suspect at least one narcotic property to it. All I do know for certain- it does help in coping with a mouth that becomes a trainwreck.
I have been told by my Oto/ENT that the combo of chemo and rad has been deemed the most effective treatment for Nasopharyngeal, which appears to include the tongue cancers. With me, it was mega-doses of Cisplatin, and Flourouracil, with full head and neck rads. I have personal knowledge of a man I used to work with who was treated with only rads, and the C eventually came back and got so bad he had to go thru one heckuva Op, which included removal of a large part of his tongue- and the University of Iowa Docs said he should have initially been treated with both chemo and rads, and which may have made that major Op, and it's consequences, unnecessary.
Just something to think about, compliments of the University of Iowa, which claims to be cutting-edge.
Hondo- is it your opinion that you should've gotten both C&R in your first treatment, and it may have taken care of it? You know what my treatment was. I do, my Brother, wonder, just as I wish you had gotten both that first time, if there was a chance that could've ended it for you.

Like you Kent, I was hit heavy from the get go...hopefully that will be the only time.
I also had the regime of nine weeks of Cisplaten, Taxotere and Flouraouracil (5FU) followed with seven weeks Carboplaten and 35 daily Rads....no surgery/dissection or PEG though.

If you do get a prescription for it, make sure they put the warning label on to shake well or your entire head will be numb for days. First hand experience with that one.0 -

We had a method for communicating as I couldn't talk on the phone. I would send an e-mail to the person and then call their pager, this was a long time ago, and when they saw my number they would go check their e-mail. Maybe you could do something similar.0 -
Magic Mouthwash
The best thing I use for pain was liquid lidocain. I carried it with me everywhere and once I forgot it and someone in the family had to bring it to me........ The magic mouth wash burned my mouth..... I actually tried everything..... I was told I had Yeast infections.... I was treated over and over for the infections, but I actually think my mouth was just wasted from the radiation. Get a feeding tube. PEG tube.0 -

mine was called magic swizzle. i carried mine everywhere too. at the height of my pain i re-named it not-so-magic-swizzle. i know it was helping, but by that point my mouth was so fried, it did not seem like it. it took some of the edge off the pain.0 -

Hello All..
I am bumping this thread to see which recipe for Magic Mouthwash was your favorite.
(passing on the info...no need for mouthwash now...AMEN)
I had benadry, maalox and lidocaine which I thought was just ok.
I did artificial saliva and baking soda/salt rinse too, but that did not help with the eating.
Thanks

I'm going to need it, and after looking it up on the internet saw that there were about 10 different recepies. Now I'm asking, too...who all got a recepie that seemed to work really well for them...well, at least well enough they could get food down for a little while after using it.

Mine is just 2% lidocaine, plus an antacid and benadryl. It doesn't have an antifungal. Ive been on it for two months now. It works well for me. At first I had trouble with it numbing my throat so much I couldn't swallow. So I learned to use a very very small amout of it, and not swallow it. It doesn't last as long now as it did when I first started using it. that's why they say only use it 3-4 times a day, because it becomes less effective if it is overused. I only use it when my ulcers are really gouging me, which is usually after liquid lunch and supper, and again at bedtime. Especially at bedtime it helped a lot at the end of rads, because it made things comfortable enough to go to sleep. If I had to chose between magic mouthwash and pain pills, I'd take the magic mouthwash and leave the pain pills at home.
