Flushing port ?

I know I saw the answer to this question somewhere recently, but can't seem to find it now after searching. How often should your port be flushed? I finished Chemo the end of October and it has not been flushed since. (Should be on Herceptin, which was the purpose of the port in the first place...but I won't go there!)The area has been a little sore lately and it has me concerned.

    Hi Cathy. I had a port for chemo and kept it for about 9 months afterwards. During that 9 months my port was used to draw blood every 3 months but I also had to come in every 6 weeks to have it flushed.

    Chemo port flush
    I read information on chemo port that said it should be flushed once a month. I suppose different doctors or clinics may use a different rule, but more than 2 months seems like a long time. You should probably call and find out. I go once a month for zometa infusion, so my port gets flushed in that process. If I don't get the infusion, I would still go to have the port flushed.

    I had my port in for a year
    I had my port in for a year following chemo, and I went in every 3 or 4 weeks to have it flushed....

    they told me every 6 weeks
    they told me every 6 weeks but they took my port out ofter the first 6 weeks i would call the onc office as ask good luck

    I had mine for 8 months
    Flushing every 3-4 weeks.

    I think it depends on the kind of port you have. I have a "Power Port" and was told it has to be flushed every 6 weeks. I have Herceptin every 3 weeks until Oct. I would call your oncol. doctor to find out what he/she recommends.

    My port is flushed monthly but my doc says every 4 to 6 weeks. I have my whole list of appt. thru Oct 2010 and will get new list after that.
