Hi Steve,

Hi Steve,
I am on folfiri + avastan. I was delayed twice so far for low neutrofil counts + once because I was dehydrated. I have had 7 rounds of this treatment + go for #8 tomorrow. My oncologist said that if I have low counts often she will reduce the chemo.
Sounds like you are a hockey player; my 16 year old daughter plays in a local league & for her school team. We are Canadians; avid Toronto Maple Leaf fans. Take good care!0 -

But to answer your question. If your RBC, WBC is too low they will delay treatment or request you get a RBC or WBC booster shot. If platlets are too low, they will delay hoping it will increase if not, then I think, a blood transfusion is required to bring them back-up, but I could be wrong.0 -
Go Wings
Sorry, but I have to root for our home town team. Got a great nephew, think he is around 14, anyway, he was in Moscow playing on the US team. Wow, what an experience he got to have, he was there for a couple weeks. Anyway, lots of people have low counts, if it continues to happen they might give you the shot for it. George never had to get the shot but lots of people do. Delays are common, don't let it get your down, just stay the course. You talk about playing hockey, last year George was just starting his therapy and was yelling at a hockey game on TV and I got upset, told him, you are on chemo therapy, you are suppose to stay calm, now I laugh about it, but I was so overprotective, poor guy. Now if he says how about a cup of coffee I just say thanks, I would love one. Take care - Tina0 -
Common
After the 5th treatment my chemo was delayed each time (by a week) due to low platelet counts plus daily shots of neupogen several days before chemo infusions. This is very common on the treatment that you are on. My doctors told me there really isn't anything to eat or drink to raise your platelet count it just has to do it on its own. They do say that organ meat does help somewhat so I used to eat gizzards and hearts right before blood count days. This can be very upsetting because most of us have to mentally and physically prepare for infusion day so a delay can be be a big let down. Good luck on the platelets.
