Colostomy and colonoscopy

Has anyone had a colonoscopy since they had a colostomy? (Say that fast 5 times!). I have my fisrt one since my surgery last March scheduled for next Thursday and for some reason I am a little freaked out. Oh I dread the prep. UGH! But when I wake up will my stoma hurt? I can't compare it to my first one because they took a section to test and that was a bit painful. However just wondering what others experiences were with this.

    Colostomy/Colonscopy
    My husband will be going in April for his 3rd colonscopy since his colostomy,(oh yes,say that 3 times fast).He has had no issues at all. The only thing that we have encountered is that he does not take the full prep ammount (doctors recomendation), as some much of the colon has been removed. We have had good luck with a prep called Movi Prep. Here's a funny, the 1st time the nurse who scheduled his appointment forget to tell anyone my husband had a colostomy, well that caused a few moments of excitement. (now I always make sure everyone knows) Best of Luck Thursday

    I've had a colonoscopy since my colostomy,it was no big deal,they did it thru the stoma,and it did not hurt at all.But I was hungry afterwards.It was actually easier then doing it the other way.good luck

    Colonoscopy with a stoma..............
    It was a walk in the park..no pain at all.I had to drink only 2 bottles (8 oz)each of mag citrate ( because of not as much to look at anymore) and with the bag I simply went on about my business. When the bag filled up (and I have a disposable, not a reusable) I simply threw it away and put another one on. It was a lot easier than sitting on a toilet and there was no raw tail either.....go all day when you do this and at night just before you go to bed you will put a new bag on. You will have some in the overnight bag when you get up but that is ok also. simply change it and put on a fresh one and go have the ostomy done. The gastro guy/gal will after you are in twilight or asleep will take it off do the colonoscopy and the put the bag back on for ya...it was as if I never changed my daily routine at all. I, like you, didn't know what to expect but was informed in here by Tinyone or Patti that it was easy to do. It was a piece of cake...don't change any of your daily activities but maybe if you go out somwhere take 3 or 4 extra bags with you. Also be careful when you change the bags, it will be very watery and very aromatic...lite candles helps a lot when its to cold for me to change it outside as I normally do for family courtesy... Love Hope and Hamburgers after its over.....Buzzard

    My last one, which was almost a year ago, was through the stoma. The prep wasn't any worse than without a colostomy- they both rather sucked. The colorectal surgeon (how's that for service, my surgeon, who called my colon, her colon, wouldn't let anyone else do it) had me lay on my back, then the next thing I remember was her pushing on top of my gut and me pushing her back- then she musta upped the sleepy dose- and that was it. Yeah, that was it. Not a big deal at all.

    I don't know why, after all I have been through, this procedure is stressing me out! Like I am really scared to be put to sleep again too. And this is only twilight sleep. I had 80% of my liver resected and that makes this a piece of cake. I guess I just know more than I did. Last year when all this started I was in shock mode and just did what the dr's said....

    oh yeah we all can certainly relate. I used to think I was tough- but actually just on autopilot through cancer treatment. I have had 2 orthopedic procedures since then and I was a basket case for both. Both are usually done with a local, I demanded a general- and also had to be sedated a bit before that. The sounds, smells, even the people in scrubs- I just could not handle the anxiety. I will say that the orthopedic surgeon was the kindest, most understanding and most helpful. Seriously, I think it is rather like surviving a plane crash only to have to fly again, and again, and again. Me? no fricken way would I get back on a plane!

    Hi, Yes I had the pleasure of having one last year. My surgery was May OF 2007. The only thing is it's best to have a large pouch on instead of the mini ones I wear. It will fill up fast. Other than that no problem, it might make your stoma area sore for a short time. Your right about the stuff you drink, sure doesn't taste like kool aid. Good Luck. Jim

    Just had it done today and the only thing that was bad about it was it was that i hit a skunk on the way to the hospital.

    the proceedure took no time at all, and i feel fine except for some unomforable gas,

    For what it is worth, it was a breeze! And was clear - YAH!

    The worst was drinking the stuff...ugh!

    Thanks so much for to all who took the time to post here. It really helped me too! Had the test yesterday and am all clear for the colon I have left. Much more to come but "talking about it" surely helps!

    Just remember
    That the stuff you drink takes effect much faster with the bag. My first time I was expecting the 30 minutes before it took effect and it only took about 10 and by the time I got to the bathroom, my bag could not hold all the "crap" and it made a mess in my bathroom! I laugh about it now but it was not funny back then.

    No pain at all.
