Thanks for replying, I too am shocked that gynos really don't know what they are looking at. Our surgeries were very close in date. How do you feel? I know you are itchy like me. How can we tell the difference from normal itching to abnormal itching? I understand laser usually has to be done a few times and usually the cure rate is 95 percent and it keeps it at bay for at least 5 years. I bet the laser must have hurt? If my most recent biopsy is positive then I will try the Aldara creme and in April when I return he will see if it worked, if not then he will do the laser at that time. How old are you? And how old is your Aunt? I'm 46. I don't smoke do either of you? I have Hashimotos Thyroiditis. Do wither of you have an autoimmune disorder because I heard it may be related to endocrine disorders. I am asking these questions because our medical community doesn't seem to know anything. Maybe there is another link besides HPV, because many women have HPV and never get this. I am married 20 yrs and can count on one hand my sexual experiences
I went to school with girls who slept with everyone and none of them got this. I am very frustrated as well as sad and sometimes depressed. I can't relax, I worry if and when it will come back? if it will be invasive? will we catch it? Or will I become something of a freak as they keep taking more tissue and cutting me open, someday to maybe lose my genitals completely? Family and friends don't understand, they think it isn't cancer so move on. Or that maybe I'm feeling sorry for myself. I'm upset about using all my vacation time for doctor appointments, surgeries, etc. Is this what life has become being worried if this is ever going to stop? I just am not myself since this. I am sad, pissed off as well and mentally drained. I'm glad I can tell you my stuff since I know you understand. Where are you from? I'm from the NYC area. Awaiting my biopsy results I guess I'll get them next week. I am now changing my underwear a few times a day and washing with a soft cloth with warm water only, it is helping a bit with itching. no more soap, no more dyes and perfumes in laundry detegents as well as fabric softeners. I am washing my underwear separate with a double rinse. And no more shaving too close in that area
Ok thanks for listening, keep in touch. Linda BTW: How close were your Aunts surgeries?
Linda,
Today I feel better than I have all week. I only ended up in the tub once last night so maybe it's almost over. As far as the itching goes I still itch at night which is how it was before surgery so I don't really know if it's because of it healing or not. I guess I won't really know until it's 100% better. To answer your question about the laser part I honestly don't know since my doctor did both at the same time. I do know that where he lasered it's a burn and it's still sensitive. I'm jealous you can wear panties. I'm stuck in dresses and skirts to keep it "aired out". I did attempt mens lounge pants and that was a mistake it seemed to do more harm than good I hurt so bad the next day.
About me personally... I just turned 30 New Years Eve and I reside in the Kansas City area. Overall I'm pretty healthy other than I'm at high risk for diabetes and I do smoke. The smoking I was told will greatly increase my chances of this coming back so I've started to cut back and will hopefully be done before the end of the month. Although I've not exactly been an angel, I don't think of myself as a person who's laid around. I've always been picky about who've I've messed around with and have always made it clear to them that I'm it, there's to be no one else. I can relate to how you feel about HPV. I contacted my old gyno to make sure there was actually a test done and there was and it was positive. I have told a few close friends and they really made me feel like crap. They made me feel like I was dirty and just whored around. I was thinking to myself, I had sex and I apparently made some bad choices but the only difference is I know. Now I know who my real friends are.
My aunt has had 3 surgeries, I know her last one was 2 years apart from the second one. I feel weird talking to her about my problem because she's my aunt and all. I just figure she obviously has first hand knowledge and doctors try to sugarcoat everything which I hate.
I've been off work since December 22nd and I can't wait to go back. I've always been an active person and being home all the time and dealing with all of this is depressing me. Thankfully I have FMLA and a boss who is very understanding and keeps reminding me that it'd do more harm than good for me to return to work before I'm certain I can deal with it. The pay is killing me to. I have my rent and bills paid and my smart dad made me pay ahead on some of them so I'm good there. LOL I told my father this is the most expensive surgery I've ever had in my life. I'm always making trips to Walgreens to find something to help with the pain or itching.
I too worry about if and when this will return. I don't like missing work and using all my time to deal with female problems, especially since I've only been with my company for a year. I really wonder how we'll deal with all of this when Obama's healthcare deal kicks in. I pray god comes back before we ever have to deal with that.

Pam, I completely understand the pain when you have to use the restroom. As recommended in previous posts I have been using a squirt bottle when I pee, it has helped tremendously with the pain. I went to the doctor yesterday to have all stitches removed. I really wanted to kick my doctor! He refused to numb the area at all which really made it hurt even worse. After 3 attempts and crying histerically I made him put my lidocaine jelly on the area before he tried to remove any more. He afterwards tolds me that I don't have cancer and the worse part is over. I know I should be happy, but I felt like crap walking out of his office. I'm terrified this will come back again. I'm a single parent and I can't lose my job to keep dealing with it.
I've decided to look for a new doctor. I've not had much luck with the gyno and oncologist I've been seeing. The gyno told me a year and a half ago that it was just vaginal eczema. I'm so angry at them for mis diagnosing me and often wonder if I would've gone through any of this had they taken the time to find out what it really was. I want a doctor to give me facts, not opinions and one that will express some sort of compassion and understanding when I talk to them, not one who makes me feel like I'm just another paycheck to them.
I have an appointment with my regular doctor tomorrow to get his opinion on everything. I'm considering just sticking with him. I just haven't been 100% comfortable having him examine everything for me since I see him once a month as it is for other health issues.
I do have a question though... Now that my burn is healing I have almost constant itching in that area. What can I do to help with that??
Mindy
I have a cancer spot on the vulvar and I have found that vagisil is a great help. It stops the itching almost instantly and there is no burning when you urinate. I have to apply it after every bathroom use because it gets wiped off when I dry. I was going nuts. The doctor offered no advice except to keep it clean. The lady at the pharmacy counter of Walgreens suggested Vagisil. It's magic. My husband sent her a dozen roses.0 -

Trigun...Thanks for info.....I will check with Oncologist first only because I just had another biopsy and the area is still not healed yet. So what is your story regarding this nightmare? I know doctors offer no information because most don't know anything. You can read my nightmare above and on other discussions I started without any responses. Did you have surgery or laser, age etc? Was your doctor knowledgeable or did you find it? Do you smoke etc? Is this the first spot you found ? Any information is helpful because there really is nobody to talk to. Feel free to be open we all need support. My name is Linda0 -

I don't even know what kind of cancer I have other than vaginal. The nurse from my gynocologist called and left me a voice mail on Dec. 23rd. Your test came back, you have cancer. Have a great christmas. When I called back after xmas I was told they couldn't discuss it, I had to talk to my primary care doctor. He is out of town till Jan 15.0 -

Trigun,
I am so sorry to hear you received that news in that manner. Doctors offices are not supposed to leave voice mail...what if they had called the wrong number? They could have sent someone off the deep end!! Also, it is not up to the nurse to give out that information. The only thing she should have done was call you to set up a follow up appt. with your doctor. I would mention this to your doctor during your appt. They're off handed way of sharing this news is so wrong! Then to top it off...Have a great Christmas? I hope that this was an isolated incident and not a precurser of what to expect in the future from that office.
How are you holding up? Getting a dx of cancer and then having to wait for confirmation of the details must be weighing heavy on your shoulders. Try not to let is drag you down too much right now...maybe it was caught very early and your treatment options will be minor ones (one can hope). What symptoms are you having? My heart goes out to you. Keep us posted on what's happening...there's many good people here who have been through what your about to embark on.

question about your surgeryLCME said:VIN3
Hi Pam, I just had surgery December 21, 2009 and followed up with a different doctor in Mt. Sinai in NYC today, he found more cells that were left during surgery, he did a biopsy today. Something I never expected 2 weeks after surgery. the area wouldn't stop bleeding so he try to cauterize it, the pain was awful I cried for 10 minutes, he gave me Aldara cream to use till April. If abnormal cells then I will have laser surgery. This is an awful thing, so scary. I'm so sorry about your surgery. So they didn't know the area at the anus was cancer until after you came back for suture removal? Sounds like something you think they'd mention earlier, and not telling you about what was done during surgery is frightening. I feel for you, what an awful way to find out. Was plastic surgery offered? You are still a woman, we just have to make the best of what we have. Being alive is more important. What area are you from? Well get through this.
Hi,
My name is Moira. I live in the NYC and saw your post mentioning your recent surgery.
Firstly, I hope you are feeling better and that you don't require another surgery.
I have some questions for you - I'm sorry this will be a long e-mail.
I'm not sure if you have the same thing I have (VIN II) at the moment because I haven't read all your posts, but thought writing to you might help me feel a little better. I'm trying to evaluate future surgery options.
I had laser surgery for CIN III in Oct. 2008 and had minor complications from the surgery and thought it was all past me since told I was free of HPV completely in May, 2009. Unfortunately it's come back to haunt me, as I was told in this past December I now have VIN II. Needless to say I was devastated I have to go through this again, and in this new location which doesn't seem as common as my situation before.
I went to see my doctor (at New York Presbyterian in NYC) this past November and December (not realizing he had dropped my insurance plan back in August, which is another story!) and have been put on 5-Flurouracil, a chemotherapy cream, for 10 weeks. Then after 10 weeks, if the lesions haven't gone away, I will need laser surgery. I am writing to you because it looks like you had surgery recently and went to two different doctors. Can you possibly tell me who you've gone to? I am trying to get other appointments for second opinions/other biopsies, etc. now before the 10 weeks is up (because of the insurance issue - very expensive to pay without insurance, obviously) and many doctors won't see me because they apparently want to wait until I'm seen in March, post my chemotherapy treatments. I'm just not willing to wait that long because of some other reasons...I don't want to bore you with the details of why...but I'm really trying to find another NYC doctor who knows what she/he is doing.
Anyway, I'm sorry for my ramblings. I'm just not sleeping well and worrying too much about not being able to have children or having pain in the future, etc. (I am single at 36 years...which was already worrying me!) I'm scared of what the side-effects will be of the laser sugery. My doctor doesn't want to discuss any of this until March but I'd like to find out anything you know about side-effects and recovery time. I thought we could swap information and hopefully provide support to each other.
Thank you very much for any advice/information and apologies for such a lengthy note.
I do hope you are feeling better!

Hi,
I just wrote and now re-reading some of your other posts and learning a bit more about your situation. I just wanted to say that I think there is a connection between this and an immune situation I have, which I'll explain in a minute, but my doctor doesn't agree. I just have a feeling that because our immune systems are compromised, we are succeptible to getting things like CIN and VIN and it makes me upset knowing the majority of peole have HPV and don't have problems but we are unlucky - but I'm trying to be positive (it's really hard, but I tell myself there are worse things I could have). I just don't think enough research has been done on the connections. I think there is a link to my conditions because I have herpes type 1 (contracted orally, to my horror and surprise), a lifelong gift from my very first boyfriend at age 21 (sorry if I sound cynical but it was my very first sexual experience and I thought my life was ruined...but luckily rarely get an outbreak). So for years since I was 21 and then at age 30 when I got high-risk HPV from one of the 7 men I've slept with in my life (I so wish I were a virgin at this point so I'd be totally healthy!), I too have been upset thinking about how my college friends slept around with all these men and I thought I was being conservative and careful and picked up 2 STDs from 7 men. 2 out of 7 just makes me feel awful, especially since I was so careful. I totally understand the frustration. I might even be angrier because herpes flareups only happen twice a year for me but the stigma has caused issues and breakups with many men I've tried to date. I'm sorry if I'm telling you too much information but for a very long time I've been convinced there is a connection between the herpes and the HPV and thought it was interesting you think maybe there is a connection between your conditions as well.
Ok, hope to hear back from you sometime soon about your thoughts on doctors and side-effects for me to expect, etc.

Hi,
I just wrote and now re-reading some of your other posts and learning a bit more about your situation. Hey I'm sorry to hear what you're going through. In regards to HPV and Herpes having a connection I'm not really sure. I recently had a friend of mine who's an RN tell me that everyone has one form of HPV/Herpes, how true that is I don't know. I know that back in October after putting up with the itching/burning I'd had enough and demanded I have every STD test done, Herpes was one of them. At the time my lesions wasn't really raised enough to biopsy, they looked more like "vaginal eczema" so they did bloodwork. The results came back that I'd never been exposed to any strain of Herpes, not even the one that developes cold sores. I would assume the virus itself probably lays dormant like HPV I dunno.
To answer the problems we have developing from insufficient immune systems I do 100% believe that. In fact my oncologist told me that when our immune system is low that we are at a higher risk of developing symptoms related to these viruses, which is why it's crucial to take excellent care of ourselves mentally and physically. I've noticed that since my surgery if I don't get enough sleep or I run myself down I do experience mild itching all over again. Maybe its just in my head but it's always at night for reason. If I soak in the tub and blow dry the area I'm fine. I do however still itch where they lasered and also the scars where my stitches were. I'm pretty OCD when it comes to looking down there, pretty sad my nightly routine involves staring at my vulva and surrounding areas every night before bed looking for anything suspicious.
I don't know how much help this post was for you,but I wish you luck and encourage you to really find a doctor who listens. If the doctor can't devote an hour to discuss everything and answer all your questions, I'd drop 'em ad go to the next.
Take care!

At first I thought you were responding to me, then it seems like someone else is responding to you. In a previous post I mentioned doctors to you, maybe I'm confused, maybe your message was for someone else?0
